Cannot Start

I hear a starting sounds but only a black screen that no button pressing gets past. The ONLY way to kill the game it by killing the process via CLI.

I've tried Proton 10, Hotfix & Experimental and they all crash at the same spot, in the same way :| Help.

BTW: What is The5thFloor? Why is that process occasionally visible when this title runs/crashes??

Hi, thank you for reporting! Does it work if you run the game using a lower (medium) quality graphics setting?

Unfortunately I don't get that far to select settings. All I hear are startup sounds and see a black screen. Has anyone on your crew run it under Proton on Linux? If so, which Proton version works?

Hey, I run Steam on Ubuntu using Proton experimental. You should be able to start but the game currently lacks video playback and gets stuck. Will take a look what I can do!

I also cannot start, I hit play, it says running, but no other window comes up.

@Grinn, if you don't mind spending the time, could you go to your Steam Library, right click on Dark Pals (demo) -> Properties -> Installed Files -> Browse. Then go to The5thFloor\Saved\Config\Windows, open GameUserSettings and share the values in that file with us?

Hi, in the spirit of more details:

I had the same issue,
I'm on Ubuntu 25.10, black screen, only intro logo sounds and then UE5 FATAL ERROR.

The .ini file for me was inside this location:
.../Steam/steamapps/compatdata/4348890/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/AppData/Local/The5thFloor/Saved/Config/Windows

In the GameUserSettings.ini file I had to change sg.GlobalIlluminationQuality and sg.ReflectionQuality to 1.

03/15/26 Hallelujah, it's now working. It probably stated working awhile ago, but I just got around to re-installing the demo. Enjoying it now!

I am having the crashing issue as well. I don't quite follow how you guys fixed this issue. Cam you give a bit more detail? I'm not great with navigating computer stuff
