You gotta get your farm up so they can farm it for you passively. (via optional quests from npcs)
In World and Onwards, instead of gathering at a generic "plant" deposit, you look for the plant itself in the environment.
I love gathering in this game, but you should probably just not capture much until you unlock everything you need in the farm, and gather anything cool you see on your way to a monster.
Capture quests always give you a stack of (supply) tranq bombs and a trap.

Though you can never buy tranq bombs, once you get the farm set up, it is very powerful in this game and can completely remove any need to gather for materials (excluding ore and bones).
You unlock the farm either after or before your 6th large monster in story progression.
Complete optional quests to unlock new items you can get in the farm, it shouldn't take long to unlock what you need.

Regardless, if you are really adamant on capturing monsters in the early-game, you can find everything you need in abundance in the Ancient Forest.

In the Ancient Forest:

You can find two parashroom deposits in Area 2 (they're just on the ground), and 2 more in Area 11 in the "trench" that surrounds the camp.
Each despoit gives 2 for 8 parashrooms total.
Look for the yellow mushrooms.

There's 4 sleep herb deposits in Area 14, each giving 2, for a total of 8.
Take the central ramp that leads inside the giant tree, but take a left to reach Area 14, then they're all just clumped up at the bottom of the treetops.
Look for plants with blue flowers on them.

Combine parashrooms and sleep herbs to make tranq bombs, there's no bomb casings in this game, so instead of tranquiliser you just get the bombs outright.

There's 2 thunder bugs in Area 6 (on the tree tops, they're next to eachother), 2 in Area 15 just below the Rath nest at the top of the giant tree that overlooks the whole map, and another 3 strewn about on the natural catwalks just outside the Rath nest.
Each bug gives 1 thunderbug for 7 total.
Look for bright blue circles, the thunderbugs (and most bugs really) have a glowing Abdomen.

Making shock traps is the same as any of the other games, buy the trap tools, there's just no chance to fail combinations in this one (or Wilds and Rise).

Sometimes resource deposits will have a sparkle, these ones give twice as many resources, and any resources that have been marked by your scoutflies will be permanently added to your map too.
Wildspire waste is my goto place to gather thunder bugs parashrooms and sleep flowers
