How to tell if you're any good with a Bow?
Evening everyone!

So, I've been playing MHW on and off for a good few years now. Despite this I consider myself barely above average skill wise and with previous characters tended to gravitate towards Longsword and Switch Axe.

Recently I've decided to give the bow a try and am actually loving it, thanks to skills like evade extender etc. I rarely get fainted. But against larger, slower monster seem to end up spamming the skill that rains little rocks on monsters.

Haven't had any complaints, switch between the various status ailment like sleep and para to slow down monsters so people can mount them etc. dragon piercer whenever I am at a distance and other player has monsters aggro.

So, is there a way to tell if you're actually decent with a bow or am I just a beginner spamming the easy skills?

I don't know your build but as long as you follow the bow dance you're good to go. Goes as follow:

Spread > dodge > normal > spread > dodge > normal > spread, and so on.

The "staying still" start is also good, and I think it saves a bit of stamina.

Spread > normal > normal > spread > dodge > normal > spread > dodge > normal > spread, etc.

Coconut rain is good for stun and, imo, it's worth using it when the monster's down to try and get a KO, but probably shouldn't be using it beyond that.

Sharing your build could be helpful for giving you further advice.

Dragon piercer is kind of a waste of DPS if you're not built for it specifically.

Make a canteen preset and always eat for Black belt and sharpshooter.

Dash juices are pricey but extremely useful. You should save them for harder hunts.

Feel free to share your build if you'd like.
If you "rarely get fainted" and manage to do decent amounts of damage without getting interrupted too often then you can concider yourself good with any weapon.
I am not a bow player, and have never touched to bow, but "spammable" and "easy" to use moves aren't only specific to bow.

If you REALLY want to know that you are "decent" with the weapon, like Deffy said, sharing your build is better.
Here are some signs that you're going in the right direction:
- You can actually land your shots and not get screwed over by the sticky aim
- You can stay in Critical Distance a lot
- You can do the abovementioned Bow Dance (thanks, Deffy)
- You don't run out of Stamina and die in one hit
- You can do the input for Thousand Dragons - half joke but I swear it's stupid hard on controller for no reason

I think a good baseline is being able to do all of the above while properly evading/iframing attacks. The most important part, of course, is that you're having fun, regardless the amount of points checked.

Thanks for the reply, didn't even think about the canteen, only gone straight for the chef platter for the [L] Attack. But that moveset sounds about right with what I do.

I am still working on gear now that I am starting to fight elder dragons for the first time on this character but so far have.

evade extend: 3*
Constitution 5*
weakness exploit 3*

Haven't got any decent decorations yet but working on it

And use things like demon drugs, dash juice and armour juice when i can.

I assume you are in high rank. If you tend to use dash juice often (Eating for Felyne Black belt will achieve the same results), freeing up two or three points worth of constitution in exchange of anything that can improve damage or survivability, or just fit your playstyle is worth it.
But assuming you really are in high rank, you should not worry about skills that much.
