Video Game History

The history of video games goes as far back as the early 1950s, when academic computer scientists began designing simple games and simulations as part of their research. Video gaming did not reach mainstream popularity until the 1970s and 1980s, when video arcade games and gaming consoles using joysticks, buttons, and other controllers, along with graphics on computer screens and home computer games were introduced to the general public. Since the 1980s, video gaming has become a popular form of entertainment and a part of modern popular culture in most parts of the world.

PC gaming has been holding a large market share for decades and continues to grow due to digital distribution.

This group is dedicated to share video game history and discuss the biggest and best games ever made.

Capcom aims to enhance its propriety RE Engine with AI to accelerate efficiency in QA, debugging, and data processing
Some improvements will be open-sourced to support AI training, with the long-term goal of evolving its RE Engine into an "AI-generation game engine"
Capcom has announced a multi-phase project to adapt its proprietary RE Engine into an "AI-generation engine" to streamline development and optimise performance.

Capcom started building its RE engine in 2014 to develop Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, which launched in 2017. It's estimated that more than 2,000 developers use the engine.

Ishida outlined how the REX project will accelerate development, improve QA efficiency, enhance usability for new and international staff, and integrate AI into the production workflow.

New systems will be integrated, including RE:Dox for standardized data processing, RE:UI to accelerate the development toolkit, and RE:Log, which uses ID-based logging. Additional updates include the visual scripting tool RE:Flows, the reworked runtime core RE:Runtime, and a refined execution framework, RE:C++.

Ishida stated that integrating AI into the RE Engine aims to assist development, generate and interpret code, automate playtesting for debugging, and optimize performance, enabling developers to "create games together with AI."

"That is why we are currently testing out various methods of usage across our departments, including graphics, sound, and programming," the developer said.

This follows Resident Evil Requiem's inclusion in a demo of Nvidia's DLSS 5 technology, which faced criticism for enhancing character models with AI, including protagonist Grace Ashcroft.

Alleged hacker arrested over leak that exposed GTA Online's daily revenue
Dutch police detained a 24-year-old cybersecurity professional accused of running the group
Dutch police have arrested a 24-year-old Amsterdam man in connection with an investigation into ShinyHunters, the hacking group the FBI says was behind a data breach that exposed confidential GTA Online revenue figures earlier this year.

As spotted by Rockstar Intel, via Kotaku, the Dutch National Police confirmed the arrest in a statement on September 28, though it didn't name the suspect.

Reuters has now named him as Pepijn van der Stap, who works as the offensive cybersecurity lead at Neo Security in Amsterdam. He has past convictions for hacking-related offences and only joined the firm this year, even though the FBI believes he has led ShinyHunters since 2025.

ShinyHunters is linked to numerous intrusions at over 100 companies and institutions, including Rockstar, Ticketmaster and the FBI itself.

In April, ShinyHunters breached Rockstar and attempted to extort the studio, threatening to release stolen confidential data if it didn't pay. Rockstar refused, and the group published the information anyway, revealing that GTA Online generates more than $1m a day.

It's the latest headache for Rockstar's security team, following August's separate leak of GTA 6 gameplay footage by the hacker group CyberLeek, which prompted Take-Two to subpoena Microsoft, Discord and Twitter/X in an effort to identify those responsible.

Following the arrest, FBI Cyber Division assistant director Brett Leatherman warned the rest of ShinyHunters to come forward.

"Now, to the remaining members of ShinyHunters: You've heard about the arrest of your colleague. We're confident you've seen or heard things in recent days that the public has not," he said. "Other groups believed anonymity, or their friends, would protect them, and they were wrong.

"Arrests have a way of changing who is willing to talk, and seized infrastructure has a way of showing us who's left. The longer you stay in this, the more we learn about you. You know how to find us, and we know how to find you. I suggest you reach out first while the choice is still yours."
