Beware of scams
I've seen many adds about miracle air conditioners units that work magic with little energy. Supposedly, they have been devissed by genius students, former NASA engineers, etc.

Problem is there is no magic to heat management. Traditional ''pump'' way is to move heat from inside to outside. This is how your fridge/freezer works and traditional AC/Heat Pump works... it moves heat from one place to the other (i.e. outside).

Then there are the ''Swamp AC'' systems that take adventage of the evaporation process that takes heat. Those units force evaporation to pump humidity in the air to have their cooling effect. It's the same process your skin do with perspiration. Problem is you have a self contain environment where you trade a little cool for air born water (humidity) which can turn out to be as uncomfortable as no AC in the first place. Plus, too much humidity can damage wooden structural part and non-structural part as well. It does not make sense to have a Swamp AC lowering the air slightly... only for a de-humidifier to increase it as much if not more to keep humidity in check.

Then there seems to be some ''new'' units that are portable pumps coupled with fans. Sure, you'll feel cooler in front of them at short range. But the problem is the heat transfer does not goes ''outside''. It blows cool air in the front, and dump heat in the back. Basicaly the equivalent of blowing air over a cool thing (like ice), except instead of bringing the cool thing from outside the environment... you are using energy to create it. And when you use energy in a process... there is always losses. So you might feel cooler in front of the thing... but the overal system will keep increasing in temperature.

Get yourself a proper AC unit that connect to the outside (or an Heat Pump that act both for cooling and heating, except that the heating part will be limited to certain temperatures at which point resistance heating by blasting electricity in metal to generate heat might be cheaper). The low temperature point is usualy around -20C but varies by models.

Stay cool or warm. And avoid scams.

No comments, make up your own mind about this. For context, it was posted during or in close proximity to the No King Protest (peaceful from what I've read/heard). Around 7 000 000 people exercising, peacefuly, their right to speech and peaceful assembly (or at least those would be the rights here in Canada... and I figure our neighbor's are not so alien to those). Again, beside context... no comments.

There is a new movie coming out about Oppenheimer that tells at least part of the story. Him, and a few other, essentialy invented fire power 10e6 (or much more).

From a very brief research, wood combustion is around 1e6 joules to a kg so 1e3 to a g. Result may vary depending on the type of wood.

From an equaly brief research, dividing enriched uranium yield around 72.6e9 joules for a gram. Mass for mass, it is 72 600 000 times greater... per grams. I sort of understand Oppenheimer's reaction on seeing (part of) the results.

But like fire, it's a tool that can be harnessed for good. Now mind you, it is still a finite source of energy because it's akin to burning which brings a material from a higher state of energy to a lower state of energy and release the rest in the process.

Should we be wary of bombs made of increasingly highly concentrated amount of energy... definitely. Should we shy from understanding the reaction and using it to harness more efficient ''burning''... defenitely not .
