Yummy again. [08 Aug 2005|03:04pm]

[ mood | whee! ]

After being away from home for nearly three months, it's nice to finally be back in my own kitchen!

Today, I made my own refried black beans! And then I made a toasted wrap with the beans, avocado, and some feta cheese. It was pretty good, but the feta made it a little bit too salty for me, so next time I will use a plain goat cheese instead.

So, I decided I'd be brave and experiment with tofu!
The final result was a fried "chicken" sandwich. Yum!

I'm not usually a fan of premade soups in cans and things, but this one was amazing!

I am officially worn out on baking muffins. [29 Mar 2005|01:47am]

This is what five hours of baking muffins looks like!

Yes, that's my dining room table that they span.

I think there are around 12 dozen. Crazy.

I hope they are just as tasty on Wednesday morning!

There are a few great and cheap Asian grocery stores around me, and only one not-so-great and not-so-cheap one near my parents. In anticipation of my visit, my mum solicited me to do her grocery shopping.

I got distracted from her shopping list.. I was also feeling adventurous, and decided to get this Szechuan sauce mix that looked interesting. My roommate had left me some delicious brown rice that she made, and my other roommate had a tub of tofu that was going to expire in a few days, so I decided to put them all together...

My roommate and I were talking about how it's so much more expensive to buy frozen french fries compared to making your own. It's also much less tasty to do that. All that talk of potatoes made me hungry...

So, I borrowed my mum's muffin pans back in January, and had been craving muffins ever since. I finally got around to making some last week, and they were sooo good!

Junk food entry! [13 Mar 2005|08:50am]

So, I went to Merry Ann's Diner with a couple of friends because they opened up a second location and we wanted to try it. I never went to the first location because it looked kinda dirty from the outside, and I'm not really into diner food, anyway.

The restaurant was really cute, and pretty much set up like an old fashioned diner. The prices weren't too high, and I got the best grilled cheese sandwich that I've ever had at a restaurant (btw, the worst was at Steak & Shake).

Gardenburger came out with microwave dinners a few months ago.. they're not usually something that I would buy, but they were on special and I had been thinking about meatballs for a while, so I bought one! It was actually rather tasty, but the penne wasn't nearly as good as if it were fresh (though frozen pasta has never really sounded appetizing to me).

A random purchase I made while shopping with my Jon turned out to be surprisingly yummy... These "Spinach Munchees" appear to be spinach and cheese pizza rolls, except they are made with soy cheese and whole wheat flour. The junky unhealthiness seems to be a lot of the appeal to pizza rolls, but I bought them anyway. I was scared to try them, and even forgot they were in the back of my freezer for a while. After an invigorating run with my roommate, we raided the kitchen; I was pleased to find these hidden in our freezer, and more pleased that they only needed ten minutes in the oven! I don't remember how much they were, but they were really yummy, so I think you should be brave and try them, too!

Another convenience food that I enjoyed a lot were Dominex Eggplant Cutlets. Basically, it's eggplant parmesean... they are really yummy! I ate them on a sandwich once, and as an entree another time, and they were really good. I think they whole box was $4, and I've had three or four meals so far, and there are still a few cutlets left. If you see them in the store, you should try them!!

I made a couple of these during the holidays for gifts.
Pictured, is the Friendship Soup Mix and the Cowboy Cookie Mix.

For Christmas 2003, I also made Orange Cream Cookie Mix, but I didn't like it as much.
Here is the recipe for the cookies:Collapse )

omg!

Lasagna is something I'd never been brave enough to attempt to make.. until now!
It wasn't nearly as scary or difficult as I was lead to believe. It did take a little time and patience (which was unfortunate since I was in a hurry and had hungry people waiting), but it worked out excellently!

We opted against boiling the pasta ahead of time, and it turned out mostly fine.. Next time, I'll be sure to add even more water! It was yummy, but there were a few places where the noodles were a little bit more chewy than others.

<3 mamma's cooking.. [14 Feb 2005|11:08am]

I went home for the weekend and discovered my parents are seriously considering becoming vegetarians. My mum made this lovely stuffed red capsicum dish. It had brown rice, tomatoes, garlic, tofu, parmesan cheese, and some other things... I swear it tasted like sausage, however. Maybe she'll make it agin some time! =)

They're not exactly truffles, but they're really yummy, nonetheless. They're not difficult to make, but it does take a while (or at least it took me longer than I anticipated!). Since they're not an "everyday thing," the time spent making these is well worth it!.. They also last a long time, and I hear that they freeze well, too.

Whoa! az_restaurants stole a ton of my interests. I was the only person to have several of them (i.e. hobbit dinners) for ages. This is no coincidence! Wtf?

On Thursday, I was in a baking mood. Luckily, one of my classes was canceled and I had a few spare hours before having to go to work. I ended up making these delicious things:

Last weekend's fondue experiment went incredibly well!
It is sad that [on my first try] I made fondue that was 100 times better than what I was served at a restaurant "known" for its fondue. I can also make more of it for less than their $22 pricetag, and I get yummier dipping things, too!

A local coffeeshop got a new owner, who decided to buy a gelato machine.
For now, they are giving away samples and have not decided on a price or what sizes they will be served in. It is very difficult for me to not accept free food, especially when it looks so good!

From left to right:
Kiwi-Strawberry, Honey-Cinnamon, Peach, Banana, Pistacchio.

Banana and untainted Pistacchio!

I didn't expect it to be, but the Pistacchio was probably my favourite. The Honey-Cinnamon was pretty amazing, too. I liked the banana, but it seemed so ordinary in comparison. Maybe I'll get to try the other two flavours (or some new ones!) in the future. /drool
