According to The Hollywood Reporter Magnolia Films has acquired all U.S. rights to Jacob Tierney's thriller Good Neighbours (mini-review here) from Myriad Pictures.
The movie stars Jay Baruchel, Scott Speedman and Emily Hampshire in the tale of three residents of a small apartment building who are threatened by a serial killer. Look for more soon!
Synopsis
Louise (Emily Hampshire) is a reclusive girl who identifies more with cats than people. Spencer (Scott Speedman) is a wheelchair-bound widower. Victor (Jay Baruchel) is a friendly but socially awkward neurotic. These three people live in an apartment building in a small Montreal neighborhood where a serial killer/rapist is on the loose. As they grow increasingly paranoid, the three strike up very unusual friendships that will take them down some very dark and bizarre paths.

The remainder of Goon will be shot in Winnipeg and Portage La Prairie. The film is expected to be released in 2011.

Jay’s got that sort of nebbishy James Dean thing down pat. He also has a kind of long French looking face that many women including myself have been known to enjoy.

There’s a very promising cast, also featuring Baruchel, Allison Pill, Marc-Andre Grondin, Liev Schreiber and Eugene Levy, and the project’s been compared to the likes of “Slap Shot” and, more intriguingly, “Raging Bull.”
The film’s been trying to attract distributors at the recent American Film Market (which wrapped yesterday), and Twitch Film happened to spy an early poster for the film. And, you know, it’s fine. Better than ”The King’s Speech,” not as good as ”Black Swan.” But we do like the tagline: “Punch Destiny In The Face.” There’s no word on a US distributor as yet, but we imagine a debut at the 2011 Toronto Film Festival is likely, with a release following not long after.

Anyway, Goon is being presented out at the American Film Market this week in an attempt to get buyers interested, and MTV didn't just talk to Baruchel about the project, but got the first images from the film as well, one of which features Seann WIlliam Scott-- a Minnesotan, but close enough-- landing a punch out on the ice. His character, Doug, is more accustomed to bar brawls than organized sports, but he get recruited by his pal (Baruchel) to act as an enforcer for a local minor league hockey team.

Eugene Levy wants to be a 'Goon'

Eugene Levy has joined the cast of the independent comedy "Goon."
According to Variety, Michael Dowse is directing a cast that includes Seann William Scott, Jay Baruchel, Liev Schreiber, Alison Pill and Marc-Andre Grondin.
Baruchel and Evan Goldberg wrote the script, based on the book "Goon: The True Story of an Unlikely Journey into Minor League Hockey" by Doug Smith and Adam Frattasio.
Shooting is underway in Winnipeg, Canada.
Baruchel is producing with David Gross, Jesse Shapira and DCP Productions' Don Carmody.
The film centers on bouncer Doug Glatt (Scott), who upon discovering his right hook and ability to skate, joins a floundering hockey team and inspires them to new heights.
Levy is known for his work in the "American Pie" films.
