The forgotten classic: the Screen

Last but not least, we have the Screen. This is one of the oldest heat management systems in the shisha world and, although it has gradually been overshadowed by the Provost and the Kaloud, it still has its place in many enthusiasts' setups.

This system consists of a metal screen, a support ring that sits on top of the bowl and a small cylindrical chimney that helps improve airflow around the charcoal.

Its operation is simple. The charcoal rests on the screen instead of directly on the foil or bowl, allowing the heat to spread more evenly across the tobacco. At the same time, the chimney helps release excess heat, making it more difficult to overheat the bowl during the session.

Although complete Screen systems are far less common nowadays, mainly because they only fit a limited number of bowls and have been replaced by more versatile alternatives, the screen itself is still widely used.

Many experienced users simply remove the chimney and use only the metal screen. While you'll still need to rotate the charcoal occasionally to prevent the contact side from going out, this setup distributes heat very evenly across the bowl and provides excellent control throughout the session.

So... which heat management device should you choose?

The truth is that there isn't a single heat management device that's perfect for everyone. Each system transfers heat differently, and the right choice depends on the bowl you use, the tobacco you smoke and, most importantly, the type of session you enjoy.

If you're looking for long, consistent and easy-to-manage sessions, the Provost is probably the safest all-round choice. If you prefer stronger flavour from the very first draw and usually smoke heat-resistant or Dark Blend tobacco, a Kaloud may be exactly what you need. And if you enjoy experimenting with different setups, the Screen still has plenty to offer.

One of the best things about this hobby is the freedom to experiment. Many of the accessories we use today became popular because enthusiasts were willing to try new ideas. From different ways of packing a bowl to unusual combinations such as covering a Kaloud with foil to create a hotter air chamber, or even preparing fruit bowls for special occasions, there is always something new to discover.
