I Paint Emotion
I paint faces, that beautiful, most expressive part of a person, the element we always see first. I look for emotion and mystery, a fleeting moment in time. With that personal connection, I can build a storyline into the face and environment. Every person has an individual gesture, a character signature. It makes them unique. I search, and paint, until it is there, boldly on the paper, and I know I've captured not a likeness, but the person.
I paint the water, that wonderful creation that ebbs and flows in every ocean, river, bay, and marshland. Growing up on the Gulf Coast taught me the feel of moving water; scuba dive and traveling to coastal countries showed me its infinite beauty and power. It came late to my easel, but perhaps at just the time when I could see and paint its personality, as a moving thing with its own emotion.
My paintings are created with the luminous beauty of the pastel medium. It is a natural for all the techniques that I love to use, from bold color balanced with neutrals to energetic visible lines next to velvety smoothness.
If I could paint only one thing, it would be the face or an awesome wave in that small window of time that says, "this is me."

Waiting for Diego, Frida's emotion, jewelry and colors
