To enhance security, Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) is mandatory for all HL7 users. More information

What is MFA?

MFA adds an extra layer of security to your account by requiring two forms of identification when logging in. You will need both your password and a code from an authenticator app to access your account.

Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) is a security measure that protects your HL7 account by requiring two forms of verification when you sign in. Even if a password is compromised, MFA significantly reduces the risk of unauthorized access to HL7 systems and data.

What You Need

A mobile device with an authenticator app installed to generate the MFA code is preferred; however, you may use a computer (see Desktop options for Time-Based One-Time Password).

The recommended method for enabling MFA is through the Salesforce Authenticator app, available for both Android and iOS devices. Download the app by clicking the links below:

Important: - HL7 does not support SMS (text message) codes for MFA. - MFA must be completed using an authenticator app. This is a security decision aligned with Salesforce and industry best practices. SMS-based MFA is more vulnerable to interception and SIM‑swap attacks and is no longer considered sufficiently secure.

Recommended Authenticator Option - Salesforce Authenticator

The Salesforce Authenticator app provides the smoothest setup experience and is fully supported on HL7’s login platform.

Alternative Authenticator Apps

If you prefer, you can use any TOTP (Time-Based One-Time Password) authenticator app to set up MFA. Here are some alternative apps that you can use:

Additionally, many password management apps include support for TOTP authentication. With some exceptions, these are typically paid applications (as opposed to the free authenticator apps above); however, if you are already using one, it's easily configured for your HL7 account. Examples of these apps include:

Government and Restricted‑Device Users

Some government or corporate environments restrict installing MFA apps on managed devices. Please note: - HL7 requires MFA using an authenticator app (mobile or desktop‑based) - SMS or email‑based MFA is not available - If a work‑issued device does not permit authenticator apps, users typically: - Use a personal mobile device, or - Use an approved desktop password manager with TOTP support

Set Up MFA for Your Account

Once you've downloaded the app of your choice, you may now attempt to log into hl7.org and you will be guided to connect your authenticator app to your account.

Below are the screen options you will see when logging in the first time:

If you choose to use the Salesforce Authenticator app use these instructions:

No longer have access to your MFA Device?

Please use the self-service MFA reset request option to regain access to your HL7 account.

This is the preferred method for resetting your MFA device. The self-service process will send a verification code to the email address associated with your HL7 account. After you verify that code, you can reset your MFA device and set up MFA again.

If you are unable to complete the self-service MFA reset request, you may email and include a request to reset your MFA device.

Please note that webmaster support requests are reviewed during normal business hours, Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM-5:00 PM Eastern Time, excluding holidays. Using the self-service MFA reset request may help avoid delays outside of those hours.

For security purposes, webmaster requests must be sent from the email address associated with your HL7 account. If you contact us from a different email address, we may not be able to process your request.
