Went to a play at a great little theater complex this weekend -
59 E 59 st. My 'aunt' (sis's godmother) is a member. It's not a company but a theater complex that has space for other companies to use. There is one large theater and two smaller. We saw
The Seduction of Edgar Degas. I thouroughly recommend it for anyone in the NYC area!
The theater was a tiny black box theater with two to three rows of seating. The set was a backdrop, a setee, and an ottoman. I LOVE black box theater. There is a special electricity in the air and a v. dynamic relationship b'n the cast and audience - much more so than in larger theaters with stages. It creates a different kind of drama.
The play is about the French painter
Edgar Degas and his first ballerina painting. He is most known today for his many paintings of ballerinas backstage.
The acting was superb, especially the man who played Degas and the young lady playing the character Cleo. They not only created a great deal of emotion onstage, but in the audience as well. I nearly teared up a couple of times and I could see people around me feeling the same effect. There were times you forgot that you were at a play, but that you were in fact peering in to the lives of these people. That's another joy w/ black box - it draws you in closer to the actors, to the characters, to the story.
I had been sad that I was going to miss the two men's singles semis for the US open because we were in the city Saturday. Considered trying to sneak in to Arthur Ashe. ^_^ But when we walked in to the aunt's apt, there upon the TV was the visage of Roger Federer, already on his way to beating down Djokovic. Bless Tom for being a tennis fan. They'd even gone to Opening day and saw Nadal play round 1! So Tom and I watched tennis while Mom and Fran played with ancestry.com and Hannah beat water and wind upon Manhattan.
I was upset with Nadals level of play and hoped that the extra rest after the cancellation would help him. But Murray held his own and played amazingly. The final tonight b/n him and Federer will be awesome and entertaining. I want Fed to win - 5 opens in a row, and he's just that cool - but Murray winning would be an interesting upset, and exciting tennis. For fans, it's win/win. But I fear commentators going overboard with "is this the beginning of the end for Federer?" crap. The guy had mono! You don't bounce back from that!
The Olympics and the Open have distracted me from the Yankees and their deplorable playing. And now the Giants are back on.
Do I watch too much tennis? Perhaps. Do I watch too many sports in general? Most likely, but oh well. Better than reality tv.^_^
