Expanded ABLE Eligibility
Jan. 1, 2026, was a milestone for the disability community in Texas and across the nation. That’s when the ABLE Age Adjustment Act took effect, expanding ABLE eligibility to individuals whose disability occurred before the age of 46.
This change gives millions more Americans with disabilities — including many Texans — the opportunity to enroll in an ABLE account, a powerful tool to save for today and plan for tomorrow.
Expanded eligibility is a game changer for adults who may have developed disabilities later in life — including those with mental health conditions, chronic illnesses or injuries acquired in adulthood — and who may have previously been excluded from ABLE account benefits. The expansion impacts more than six million Americans, including an estimated one million veterans.
