Sustainable content and services are the cornerstone of Yle’s operations
Sustainable content is at the core of Yle’s sustainability efforts. According to the Act on the Finnish Broadcasting Company, Yle’s content must reflect the surrounding society and provide a versatile and diverse image of the world. The content must be made available to everyone on equal terms, both nationally and regionally.
Moreover, Yle must consider the availability of the services in Finnish, Swedish and in several minority languages in its programme offering. Yle pays special attention to the accessibility of its services. Read more about Yle’s services to improve accessibility.
The operations must be reliable and free from any external sources of influence. Yle’s publishing activities and content production are based on independence, Yle’s values and the ethical principles of the media sector. Yle’s responsible editors are appointed by the Board, and they direct and supervise editorial work.
Yle uses resources carefully
Yle uses its tax funding sustainably, responsibly, diligently and appropriately to fulfil Yle’s statutory duty. See Yle’s financial figures
Yle complies with the Act on Public Procurement and Concession Contracts. The Act contains an exception to competitive tendering that applies to the acquisition of programme material. Read Yle’s procurement principles.
In 2025, Yle published a new procurement strategy in which the importance of sustainability is increasing. The procurements take into account the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and promote energy and material efficiency as well as the circular economy. Yle's most significant procurement entities are related to technology acquisitions and program content procurement.
Ylen acts responsibly as an employer
Yle wants to be a workplace where everyone can be themselves and which enforces the principles of equality and non-discrimination.
We value the diversity of our personnel and pay particular attention to the work atmosphere and a functional workplace community. We ensure that the skills and competence of our personnel can meet the needs of the ever-changing operating environment. Read the personnel key figures.
Yle strives to forge new partnerships that generate extensive benefits for society
Yle cooperates with, for example, educational institutions, universities, cities and municipalities, organisations, cultural and technology operators, production companies and other Finnish media. Yle’s goal is to find and create new forms of cooperation and to create added value through cooperation for partners and, more broadly, for Finnish society at large. Read more about cooperation with Yle.
Yle requires all its partners to commit to Yle’s Supplier Code of Conduct. Production companies are also bound by the creative sector's sustainability model.
Yle aims to be carbon neutral by 2035
The State's ownership policy resolution requires state-owned companies to commit to the Paris Climate Agreement's goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees. Yle implements this policy resolution in its own operations by calculating its carbon footprint and aiming to reduce its total emissions. Yle's most impactful environmental actions include providing fact-based content about the causes and effects of climate change, as well as mitigation and adaptation measures.
In 2025, Yle's total carbon footprint was 58,927 tCO2e. This figure includes viewing, listening, and using Yle's services in Finnish homes and public spaces. Our total carbon footprint has remained approximately the same since 2021 as calculation methods have become more precise. Yle's carbon footprint without the use of services, which the company can influence through its own actions, was 30,964 tCO2e in 2025.
For a media company dependent on electricity, uninterrupted energy availability at a competitive price is vital. The energy that Yle uses in its own facilities is carbon-emission-free. To increase energy self-sufficiency, the company has evaluated the possibilities of solar panel systems and geothermal energy at the Pasila campus, and the acquisition of a solar power plant is being planned.
To promote the quality of carbon footprint calculation in the media industry, Yle developed a model in 2025 in cooperation with LUT University that can be used to assess how much climate emissions are caused by media distribution through different channels. The model covers television and radio, as well as streaming services like Yle Areena.
In its operations, Yle is committed to the following:
the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, the ten principles of the Global Compact corporate responsibility challenge, the Carbon-Neutral Finland 2035 goal, the requirements of state ownership governance and the creative sector’s responsibility model.
Yle has been serving as a member of the Finnish corporate responsibility network FIBS since 2011. Yle reports to the Transparency Register of the Finnish Financial Supervisory Authority every six months. Yle is a member of the EU Transparency Register.
