TV4 reported on Monday that Tallink leaders began looking into using the same fuel for Silja as it uses for its own ships. The oil has three times the sulphur content compared to the fuel Silja currently uses.
Tallink-Silja communications director Thomas Nylund denied the claims and said that Silja’s current environmental policy will remain the same.
"I don’t know where the Swedish news got this information, but there is no basis for it. In fact, I have been assured that Silja’s environmental policies will continue and that Silja ships will keep on using fuel with a 0.5 percent sulphur content," he said.
According to TV4, Tallink is the only shipping line on the Baltic that uses fuel with a sulphur content of 1.5 percent. Silja ships currently use fuel with a sulphur content of 0.5 percent.
High-sulphur fuel is 20 percent cheaper than fuels with low sulphur content. TV4 reported that Tallink could save at least five million euros annually by using the cheaper oil.
