From birth to immigration to Canada

Moriho Oyama was born in Oshiro, Nakagusuku Village (now Kita-Nakagusuku Village), the eldest son of Moriyoshi and Kame Oyama. His family is said to be descended from Gosamaru, a loyal retainer known for the Gosamaru-Amawari Rebellion.

After graduating from an elementary school, he and his family immigrated to Canada in 1927. They lived in Vancouver for a time, but moved to White Rock and Kagran, where they ran a farm. In 1937, he bought a truck and started a transportation business. However, when the Pacific War broke out with the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, the Oyama family was evacuated from the coast and placed in a concentration camp inland, where their farm and crops were confiscated and the family was separated. After being liberated the following year in 1942, the family was engaged in growing beets in Caulder, Alberta, and in 1944, he found work in an auto repair shop.

(Minatogawa )

The Minatogawa Site (Minatogawa Iseki) or Minatogawa Fisher Site (Minatogawa Fisher Iseki) [Note 1] is a composite archaeological site located in Aza Nagage, Yaese Town, Shimajiri District, Okinawa Prefecture, spanning the Paleolithic Period through the Okinawa Shell Mound Period, the Gusuku Period, and into modern times [1]. It is known for the discovery of the Minatogawa Man, a Paleolithic human. On July 5, 2016 (Heisei 28), it was designated as a town-designated historic site by Yaese Town under the name “Minatogawa Site” [1].
+++++++
[Note 1] Because the site where human remains were discovered in Minatogawa was a fissure (a crack; in English, “fissure”) on the cliff face of a quarry, it had long been known as the “Minatogawa Fissure Site”; however, following its designation as a town historic site in 2016 (Heisei 28), it was officially renamed the “Minatogawa Site” [1].

Location
It is located in Togama-hara, a sub-district of Nagemo, Minato-gawa, Yaese Town (formerly Gushikami Village), Shimajiri District, in the southern part of Okinawa Main Island, approximately 10 kilometers south of Naha City.

Background of the Discovery

Fisher Section

Fossil (replica) of the Minatogawa Man (Minatogawa No. 1). On display at the National Museum of Nature and Science.

In November 1967 (Showa 42), while Naha City was under U.S. administration, archaeological researcher Moriyasu Oyama, who operated a gas station in Naha, discovered what appeared to be an animal fossil in a garden stone (awase-ishi, a type of limestone) he had purchased from a stone shop in Minatogawa, Gushikami Village (now Yaese Town). He speculated that humans might have once hunted animals in the area where this stone was quarried. Ōyama visited quarries in the Minatogawa and Nagemo areas, and upon excavating a fissure in the cliff face, he unearthed the bones of a wild boar dating back more than 10,000 years. Ōyama became convinced of the existence of humans who had lived by hunting wild boars, but the only archaeologist who agreed with this theory was Shinju Tawada. Bones from a wide variety of animals—including habu snakes, mice, and frogs—were unearthed at the site, but human bones were hard to come by. As dusk fell and darkness set in, Oyama continued the excavation, illuminating the site with his car’s headlights.

On January 21, 1968 (Showa 43), Oyama discovered human bones at the Minatogawa Site. On March 19 of the same year, he guided Nao Suzuki, a professor at the University of Tokyo who had come to Okinawa to excavate the Yamashita-cho First Cave Site, to Minatogawa. A preliminary survey confirmed that among the fossil bones Oyama had collected were two human tibiae, one humerus, a big toe, and a skull fragment.

The first survey was conducted from late 1968 through 1971 (Showa 46), and full-scale excavations began in 1974 (Showa 49), revealing 5 to 9 nearly complete skeletons. These are known as the Minatogawa people [2].

History of the finds

The skeletons were found at the Minatogawa limestone quarry, located 10 km (6 mi) south of Naha, near the southern tip of the island. Okinawan businessman and amateur archaeologist Seiho Oyama noticed fossil bone fragments in some building stone blocks he had purchased from the quarry, and for two years he kept watch as the quarry was worked. In 1968, Oyama reported the finding of a human bone at the quarry to Hisashi Suzuki, a professor at Tokyo University.

A team led by Suzuki excavated the site during three seasons (1968, 1970 and 1974). Their finds were described in 1982.[3] The skeletons are now in the Anthropology Museum, Tokyo University.[6]

Description

Fossil of Minatogawa Man 1, replica, exhibited in the National Museum of Nature and Science, Tokyo, Japan.
All skeletons were found buried inside a vertical fissure in the limestone rock, about 1 m (3 ft 3 in) wide, which had been filled over millennia by residual red clay mixed with travertine, limestone fragments and bones. Suzuki's excavation was limited to the part of the fissure that was exposed on the quarry's face, 5 m (16 ft) high and 20 m (66 ft) above the present sea level, and extended about 6 m (20 ft) into the cliff behind.[3]

The bones recovered from that fissure belonged to between 5 and 9 distinct individuals (two males and the rest females), mixed with over 200 fragments of deer and boar bones. The finds lay on a diagonal band extending down and forward by about 6 m (20 ft) within the fissure. The lowest-placed skeleton (Minatogawa I, a male about 25 years old) was standing upside-down, but his bones were mostly in their anatomical positions. The other skeletons were found with their bones all mixed up and scattered over several meters. Skeleton IV, in particular, was found as two sets of bones separated by a couple of meters; his skull has a perforation that seems to have been caused by a sharp hard point, and his left and right arms seem to have been fractured the same way. Suzuki conjectures that the individuals were killed with spears or arrows by enemies who cannibalized their victims (breaking bones in the process) and then threw the remains into the fissure, which had been used as a trash dump (which explains the animal bones).[3]

The individuals were rather short at about 155 cm (5 ft 1 in) for the males and 140 cm (4 ft 7 in) for the females, and their cranial capacity was close to the lower end of the range of the latter prehistoric Jōmon (16,000 to 2,000 years ago) and modern Japanese people.[3] The teeth were extremely worn out, suggesting an abrasive diet.[5] In one of the mandibles, the two median incisors had been knocked out at the same time, well before death—a custom that is known to have been practiced by the Jōmon people.[3]

Geologists have estimated that the fissure was created by an uplifting that bent and fractured the limestone rock layers, more than 100,000 years ago. Charcoal fragments in the fissure have been carbon-14-dated to about 16,000 and 18,000 years ago.[3]

Physical characteristics
All Minatogawa samples fall within the range of Eastern and Southeastern Asian craniometric characteristics. Certain distinct features caused the Minatogawa samples to be regarded as distinct from Jōmon peoples, although a close relationship could neither be proven nor disproven. According to Baba & Narasaki (1991), the Minatogawa specimens had overall Mongoloid traits but differed in part from other Jomon period samples.[7] Kaifu et al. (2011) similarly observed certain distinct traits between the Paleolithic Minatogawa specimens and Neolithic Jomon samples, and suggested that the Minatogawa specimens were possibly more aligned with Southeastern Asian and Pacific groups when compared with Jomon samples. In line with the peopling of Eastern Asia, it is suggested that the ancestors of Minatogawa specimens similarly arrived from a southern route, possibly diverged from other East Asians already in Southeast Asia.[8]

Certain differences were observed between different Minatogawa samples as well, presenting a more complicated picture. The Nekata Minatogawa sample was found to be closer aligned to other Jomon samples, than the Tibia Minatogawa sample, but their individual variation does not necessarily point to two distinct groups.[9]

Genetics
Previously it was suggested that the Minatogawa specimens may have not been closely related to other Jomon period samples or modern Japanese people. However, recent DNA analyses revealed genetic links to both Jomon and Japanese people, as well as to the broader East Asian population cluster. The Minatogawa specimens' genetic type, based on extracted DNA alleles, was found to be common among modern Japanese peoples, Jomon and Yayoi samples, although being not their direct ancestor. The scientists (Mizuno et al. 2021) suggested that the Japanese have distant ancestral ties to the Minatogawa specimens. Jun Gojobori, a lecturer of physical anthropology at the Graduate University for Advanced Studies and one of lead authors of the study, concluded that Eastern Asian populations, specifically on the Japanese archipelago, show genetic continuity with ancient samples.[10][11]

The Yamashita Dojin and Minatogawa Humans
In 1962 on a Ryukyu limestone plateau on the south side of the Onoyama area of Yamashita-cho, Naha City, in the Yamashita Daiich cave fossilized human remains were discovered. The human fossils excavated here were called the Yamashita Dojin and are believed to be the remains of an 8-year-old girl from 32,000 years ago.

In 1967, in a stone quarry of Gushikami-son, the fossilized remains of 7 Stone Age humans and the fossilized bones of deer and boar were discovered.
The fossils were named after the area where they were found, Minatogawa, and are estimated to be 17.000 years old. The discovery of complete Paleolithic human skeletons with complete skulls, feet and hands were the first such finds in Asia and were of worldwide interest.

The human fossils found at Minatogawa are similar to those of the Peking man (sinanthropus) and the Luijiang human found in continental China. They are said to be the ancestors of the Okinawans living today, but there is much about the Minatogawa humans that remain a mystery. Also there have been very few stone age tools unearthed from Minatogawa sites and details on the lifestyle of these early humans is not known at all.
