Wreckless Eric (Goulden) was one of the leading figures of the first wave of English punk rock. His peculiar and absurdist hybrid of punk anarchism and pop melodicism relied on a croaking voice and junkyard arrangements. Wreckless Eric (Stiff, 1978) and The Wonderful World (Stiff, 1978) are the albums of his golden period, packed with eccentric ballads (Reconnez Cherie), driving rock and roll anthems (Whole Wide World), and supersonic blues pieces with hallucinatory rhythms (Semaphore Signals). The Whole Wide World (Stiff, 1979), also known as Big Smash (Strange Fruit, 1980), still includes Good Conversation, but the clown had already been abandoned by a record industry that was no longer interested in investing in punk. Goulden disappeared for several years, and when he returned at the helm of Captains Of Industry, he was just one of many pub-rock amateurs. Leading the Len Bright Combo, he released two slightly more respectable garage-rock albums. Le Beat Group Electrique (New Rose, 1989) was the last album recorded under his own name. At The Shop (New Rose, 1990) is an EP collecting a live performance in Paris. Wreckless Eric returned unexpectedly with his solo album The Donovan Of Trash (Sympathy, 1993) and later as leader of the Hitsville House Band, whose album is 12 O’Clock Stereo (Casino, 1994).

Wreckless Eric & Amy Rigby (2008), the collaboration with his wife, showed how badly Wreckless Eric had aged.
