311, a band from Omaha (Nebraska), spent years playing a hybrid of funk and rock too far from Los Angeles and San Francisco to be heard by the masses. Dammit! (What Have You, 1990), Unity (What Have You, 1991) and Hydroponic (What Have You, 1992) were their early albums. Freak Out / My Stony Baby / Hydroponic& (1992) was the first single.

Their effervescent cacophony of heavy metal, reggae, rap, funk was revealed to the world by 311 Music (Capricorn, 1993) and Grassroots (Capricorn, 1994). Do you right, Feels So Good, Visit and My Stoney Baby were the hits in 1993; Homebrew, Lucky and 8:16am followed in 1994.

Relocated to Los Angeles, the band started mellowing down. 311 (Capricorn, 1995) is the album with Down, Don't Stay Home and Jackolantern's Weather. Transistor (Capricorn, 1997) offered the usual dose of funk (Transistor, Prisoner, Beautiful Disaster) but also dub (Light Years, Strangers) and jazz (Stealing Happy Hours).

Freeze Time and Come Original are the standouts from Sound System (Capricorn, 1999).

From Chaos (2001), Evolver (2003) and Don't Tread On Me (2005) were less and less interesting.
