Ennesimo combo di ska a tentare di sfruttare il momento favorevole del genere,
questi Newyorkesi (capitanati dal cantante e tastierista Victor Ruggiero)
hanno il pregio di gettare nel mix un vasto spettro di influenze, dalla
bossanova al punk-rock, dalle big band dell'era swing al rhythm and blues
degli anni '50.
Il loro primo disco, Better Late Than Never (Moon, 1996),
conteneva le loro classiche Sarah, Run Away e Our Day Will Come, nonche'
due strumentali pittoreschi, Cuban Cigar e Contemplation.
Redlight (Hellcat, 1997) e` ancor piu` eclettico.
Lo strumentale di apertura, Cooking For Tommy, e` una fanfara dominata dai
fiati, mentre Tin Tin Deo rende omaggio niente meno che a Dizzy Gillespie.
Il reggae classico di Lee Perry permea Watch This, Red Light e
Rude And Reckless, ma brani come Married Girl si rifanno alla
musica leggera degli anni '60 e Come Back Baby e` pura bossanova. Qua e` la`
(soprattutto in Fried Chicken) fa capolino anche il reggae latino, il
cosiddetto "boogaloo".

The Question (Hellcat, 1999) is a 68-minute, 20-track monster of an
album. Because they touch on gospel (Mountainside) and soul
(No More Crying), on dub and pop (The Time), this is their
Sandinista.
But The Question,
Manuel, The Mummy, Power, Face in my Crowd,
keep the adrenaline pumping at the limit.
Wasted Days (Hellcat, 2001) continues the stylistic expansion with the
quasi-blues lament of Wasted Days, the quasi-country ballad
Dave's Friend and the violin-tinged Made Up My Mind, while
Wasted Days and The Nurse keep the fans dancing.
Close My Eyes (Hellcat, 2003) is mere routine.
Peculiar (2006), that includes the EP International War Criminal,
is mildly more interesting, but, fundamentally, this is a tribute to an era
that was.
