Deep Forest, the project of Eric Mouquet and Michael Sanchez, established itself in the 1990s with an atmospheric sound built around sampling. The duo used samplers to immerse ethnic elements within a high-class electronic dance music framework.

Deep Forest (Celine, 1992) uses fragments of African songs, copied, deformed, and recycled until they become abstract sounds to be mixed with exuberant disco rhythms and the melancholic melodies of keyboards (Deep Forest, Hunting, Savana Dance); or pasted over atmospheric backdrops as plaintive chants evoking the human condition (Sweet Lullaby, Nightbird, up to the solemn Forest Hymn for a universal choir).
The delicate instrumental passages of The First Twilight sit on the border with ethnic new age. It is the final stage of the novelty that began in the 1950s with The Lion Sleeps Tonight.

Boheme (Sony, 1995) pushes the idea to the extreme: Boheme is built entirely around samples of folk voices collected from around the world.

The album was followed by the singles While the Earth Sleeps, Collector Platine, Freedom Cry.

Sanchez's first solo album was Windows (1994).

Pangea (1996), the project by Deep Forest collaborators Cooky Cue and Dan Lacksman, is not too different from Deep Forest: a symphony of ethnic instruments and sampling of African voices, a wildly polyrhythmic world-music (Memories of Pangea, Water And Fire).

Deep Forest's Comparsa (Columbia, 1997) continues to provide an eclectic parade of vocalists from around the world and a hypnotic, infectious tapestry of percussions. While not substantially different from the previous ones, this album displays a bit of Latin and jazz-rock influences. Noonday Sun, Madazulu, Media Luna are the highlights.

In 2005 Sanchez left Deep Forest, and Deep Forest was basically Mouquet's solo project on Deep Brasil (2008), as was Deep Africa (2013).

Deep India (2013) was a collaboration with Indian musician Rahul Sharma.

Deep Forest returned with Evo Devo (2015), Epic Circuits (2018), which was a collaboration with Gaudi, Deep Symphonic (2020), which was an orchestral reworking of previously released compositions, Eponymous (2021), which was a re-recording of Deep Forest, Burning (2023), Crystal Clear (2024), a collaboration with Olivier Delevingne.
