Jean Derome, a cofounder of the Ambiances Magnetiques record label,
had a busy life promoting, performing and composing music around Canada.
His style can easily shift from classical to jazz, from rock to avantgarde.
Derome has written theatre and dance scores, has
collaborated with Rene` Lussier on
Fin Du Travail (Ambiances Magnetiques, 1983) and
Le Tresor De La Langue (Ambiances Magnetiques, 1989).
Another group was Les Granules (again with Lussier), whose albums were
Soyez Vigilants, Restez Vivants (Ambiances Magnetiques, 1986),
Le Retour Des Granules (Ambiances Magnetiques, 1988),
Au Royaume Du Silencieux (Ambiances Magnetiques, 1992).
Initially their project was similar to Lol Coxhill's Welfare State:
socially-inspired free jazz and folk-rock.
Confitures De Gagaku (Victo, 1988) was the first album released
under his own name, scored for a chamber orchestra of
flute, clarinet, saxophone, keyboards, bass, percussion and vocals,
inspired to Japanese culture and leaning towards an intellectual form of
pop-jazz.
Evidence was a collaboration between Jean Derome and the influential
Canadian bassist Pierre Cartier
(a project originally started by Sylvain Leroux in 1982), and mostly a trio
with drummer Pierre Tanguay.
Evidence recorded
Musique de Thelonious Monk (Ambiances Mangnetiques, 1993) and
Live A La Casa (Ambiances Mangnetiques, 2000), two tributes to
Thelonious Monk.

1989 - Les Fleurs du Tapis: this is on Ambiances Magntiques label managed by D.A.M.E. These two discs were recorded on successive days with the same recording team - can't remember why they got released on different labels. This one is a smaller group:
Jean-Denis Levasseur, sax soprano; Jean Derome, sax alto; Pierre Cartier basse electrique & compositions; and Pierre Tanguay on drums.
Then there are two recordings under Pierre's own name (also with Jean Derome and Pierre Tanguay, of course). These are:
1996, Chansons de Douve; compositions de Pierre Cartier set to poems by Yves Bonnefoy.
Pierre sang on this, with Angle Trudeau, soprano & Nolla Huet , alto; Jean-Denis Levasseur, Jean Derome, Ivanhoe Jolicoeur, Sylvain Jacob, Tom Walsh, Pierre Tanguay, & Julien Grgoire.

2006 "Chansons de la belle esprance" - a collection of songs
In the 1990s, Jean Derome formed Les Dangereux Zhoms
(keyboards, trombone, guitar, bass and drums),
a group that released
Carnets De Voyage (Ambiances Magnetiques, 1995),
Navre` (Ambiances Magnetiques, 1996),
and
Torticolis (Ambiances Magnetiques, 1998), later collected in the
three-CD boxset 1994-96 (Ambiances Magnetiques, 1998).
Navre` is possibly the most accomplished.
Navre and Toronto flow naturally and seamlessly, without
a main theme to hold them together.
Anchive, Casse-cou and Train are exercises on odd timbres
of the lead instruments.
Three Suite Piece (Recommended, 1996) is a collaboration
with Tom Cora, Rene` Lussier and Chris Cutler.
Derome's solo albums include
Je Me Souviens (Ambiances Magnetiques, 1997),
Nous Percons Les Oreilles (Ambiances Magnetiques, 1998), for two
voices and two saxophones,
Plinc! Plonc! (Ambiances Magnetiques, 2001) and
Le Magasin Du Tissu (Ambiances Magnetiques, 2002).
La Bete/ The Beast Within (Ambiances Magnetiques, 1997) and
the double album 3 Musiques Pour Ubu (Ambiances Magnetiques, 1998)
collects scores composed for dance and theatre over the years.
The sax duo Nous Percons Les Oreilles also released
La Vie C'est Simple (2001) and Shaman (recorded between november 2007 and june 2008).
A trio with Normand Guilbeault on contrabass and Pierre Tanguay on drums was responsible for:

the live Etymologie (june 2006), also devoted mostly to covers,

Jean Derome reformed Les Dangereux Zhoms and recorded To Continue (2008)
that contains six complex compositions.
Jean Derome's Chamber Music 1992-2012 (Ambiences Magnetiques,
2015) contains compositions for chamber ensemble.
Nous Percons Les Oreilles, Derome's duo with alto saxophonist Joane Hetu, returned with Un Ideal (september 2016).
Resistances (march 2017) is a solo album on which Derome plays
drums, bass, strings, synthesizer, trumpet, piano, harp and invented instruments.
Jean Derome (on flute and baritone sax) leads a mostly acoustic tentet on Sudoku Pour Pygmees (march 2018), containing the 18-minute Sudoku Pour Pygmees.

Jean Derome played
alto sax, piccolo, flutes, as well as about fifty other instruments (including game calls, Brazilian whistles, ocarinas, toy trumpets...)
on his solo album Solo Souffles (september 2020).
Rose Drummond (june 2021), a tribute to Quebec's artist Rose Drummond, features
Jean Derome (on alto sax, found objects, bass trumpet, synthesizer),
by Joane Hetu (alto sax), Alexandre Robichaud (trumpet), Robin Servant (accordion), Tom Jacques (vibraphone, percussion), Robert Bastien (electric guitar), Eric Normand (electric bass, tenor banjo) and Michel Cote (drums).
The trio with Guilbeault and Tanguay returned with Si Tu Parlais (march 2022).
La Chaleur De La Pensée (Ambiances Magnétiques, 2023) collects four works by Jean Derome commissioned by four ensembles:
the 14-minute La Chaleur De La Pensee (2016), with him on piccolo, Guy Pelletier (flutes, whistles), Lori Freedman (clarinets), Julien Gregoire (percussion), Genevieve Liboiron (violin), Julie Trudeau (cello) and Brigitte Poulin (piano); the 15-minute Tombeau de Marin Mersenne (2017), performed by Marie Josee Simard (percussion and marimba) and Louise Bessette (piano);
the 16-minute Onze Super (petits) Totems (2019), with him on baritone sax and bass flute and Lori Freedman (contrabass clarinet), voice), Michel Côté (drum kit, voice), Jean-Francois Laporte and Emilie Girard-Charest (both on Babel table) and Francis Leduc (siren organ);
the 19-minute Aboiteaux (2021), performed by a 12-musician ensemble conducted by Derome (who also plays baritone sax and piccolo).
