Laurent Garnier, a disc jockey who had cut his teeth at the “Hacienda” club in Manchester in 1987, became one of the leading figures of techno at the “Wake Up Club” in Paris. After several singles, including Lost In Alaska, Virtual Breakdown, Wake Up, Moonbeam, and Acid Eiffel—later collected on Early Works (Arcade, 1998), Garnier founded his own label and released Shot In The Dark (F Communications, 1995 – Mute, 2001), which includes tracks of old-school techno and house (Detroit-style) performed with flair, such as Astral Dreams.

Raw Works (F-Communications, 1996) (Never, 1996) still features Orgasm and Pigalle, but much of the album feels haphazardly assembled.

30 (F-Communications, 1997) (Never, 1997), with Deep Sea Diving, For Max, Crispy Bacon, and Flash Back, is somewhat scattered, and only in the singles does it offer glimpses above the average for the genre.

Propelled by the hit single The Sound Of The Big Babou, Unreasonable Behaviour (F-Communications, 1999) is another quintessential techno machine (Cycles D'Oppositions, The Sound Of The Big Baboo).

Excess Luggage (F Communication, 2003) documents three mixes of Garnier's favorite techno tracks.

The Cloud Making Machine (Mute, 2005) is a counter-experiment, meaning that he takes a clue or two from the new generations and tries to market himself as a neo-futurist rocker (Waiting For My Plane, Jeux D'enfants).
