Abigail Washburn, a
multicultural Nashville-based singer-songwriter and banjoist fluent in Chinese as well as in country, attempted to bridge cultures and traditions on
Song of the Traveling Daughter (2005), as documented in schizophrenic
and eccentric songs such as Coffee's Cold in atmospheres that are
nonetheless both austere and intimate.
The Sparrow Quartet, formed with jazz banjo virtuoso Bela Fleck,
fiddler Casey Driessen and cellist Ben Sollee, help her craft
Abigail Washburn & the Sparrow Quartet (2008), half of which is
traditionals.
Washburn and Fleck got married in 2009.
City of Refuge (2011) upped the ante by incorporating
guitarist Bill Frisell, guzheng player Wu Fei and a few rock musicians
(like the Decemberists' Chris Funk and My Morning Jacket's Carl Broemel),
boosting the arrangements accordingly and delegating songwriting chores to
Kai Welch
(Bring me My Queen,
Dreams of Nectar,
Last Train)
and Old Crow Medicine Show's Ketch Secor
(Divine Bell).
