"Yarrow" (1994) [p] +

A long 150-page poem of poems, inspired by the poet's visit in 1992 of his hometown after several years of "exile" in the USA, that is contained in "The Annals of Chile", which also contains "The Birth" and "Incantata". It an exuberant psychological self-examination disguised as a set of recollections. The technique of free association is pushed to the extreme and each poem can run the gamut from ancient classic literature to contemporary political trouble via pop music and medieval Arab legends, or Mao Zedong and Edith Piaf. The frequency and collusion of allusions, nested within virtuoso wordplay, is such that most poems, also littered with Irish expressions, are indecipherable. It is encyclopedic chaos, at times even comic, a soliloquy bordering on madness by a highly erudite raving old man who has lost the power of linear thinking.
