I know that Brooke wants to be like her siblings, but this is taking things a bit too far. While we were in the kitchen and I was making Mac N' Cheese (gourmet, I know), my little ballerina was spinning around. Unfortunately, she was wearing tights. She must have slipped and let her lip and tooth bear the brunt of the fall. I heard a very large thud and came over to her. Imagine my shock when I saw this piece of tooth on her lip!!!
Her lip was bleeding and she was inconsolable. I got a paper towel for the blood and surveyed her mouth. The tooth was badly broken, but it was not loose. I have to admit, I cried too. Gone was her perfect smile. All I could think of was how this exact thing happened to Abby. Only Abby was a month younger. This happened after 5pm, and thankfully, our dentist had an after hours number. He told me that the tooth could not be salvaged, and to come in at 8am the next day. I was sick over this. I researched and asked questions online. I think people thought that it was just a tiny chipped tooth.
Thankfully, Brooke was able to drink and eat. Her lip was quite swollen. This is a picture from the next morning.
So, I took all 4 kids to the dentist and he examined her. He saw that a bit of the pulp(root) was exposed and thought that she would need a pulpectomy. He referred me to a pediatric dentist just down the street and they called and made an appt. We went to their office and were examined by the dentist. They took X-rays and the adult teeth were not damaged. Phew! He didn't think a pulpectomy was needed. He told us that he could cap the tooth and to come back in 4 weeks. Ugh!
Two weeks later I took her for a second opinion. This dentist said that a baby root canal was needed and that they could then cap the tooth. She later called and said that it wasn't necessary. Unlike Abby, Brooke's smile shows all her teeth. We are thinking of going the capping tooth route.
I'm happy Brooke doesn't like socks because I am petrified of her slipping again. She is a trooper and is still my beautiful, happy girl!
