Merry Christmas!

Just wanted to tell everyone Merry Christmas, and have a Happy New Year!

Some good news...I received a job offer at Wake Forest University in Cancer Research!! I start on January 8th. I will be testing the cytotoxicity and specificity of newly developed drugs to cancer cells. I'll let you all know when we solve that whole cancer problem. :)

November Activities!

It has been an eventful month! We had our friend Melissa visit us from Nebraska! She flew all the way here to see lil ol' us. We drove to see Duke University and the next day drove in the opposite direction to see the mountains. We did a little gem mining on our trip, and froze our fingers off sorting through rocks for the valuables! That weekend we also brought home another rabbit! I never thought that we would become "rabbit people," but since Cory is allergic to cats, rabbits are a great alternative! We named her Rocky (yes, we're aware it's a male name, but she looks like a squirrel!)

This month I also accepted a part-time job--I'm now back in the workforce, however, not exactly doing what I am qualified for. Instead of doing biological research, I am working at a Veterinary Hospital in Winston-Salem. It's alright for now, at least I am making a little money and I get to interact with animals.

It was also our 4th anniversary last weekend! For Thanksgiving (since it was just the two of us) we cooked cornish hens--all slathered in garlicy butter! Then for our anniversary we...well, watched football and that's about it! Last year we were in San Diego for our anniversary so this year we took it easy.

Hope everyone (the Americans anyway) had a great Thanksgiving holiday!

Yet another State Park

There are about 8 state parks in our area of North Carolina alone, so we decided to have another go. This time we went to Hanging Rock State Park...I think it was much better than Pilot Mountain...mostly due to the fall colors of the trees and the waterfalls! That was my favorite part. This is at the Upper Cascades waterfalls. There were a few trails we went on to get to the different falls, but the worst trail we unfortunately left until last (not knowing how treacherous it was!). The trail to the Hanging Rock itself. This is a view from Cory's legs...hanging over the edge of Hanging Rock. The day started off cold and rainy but by the end, the sun was shining. We got lucky!

House project #1...done!

This may not seem like such a big deal, but to us it was a great accomplishment! We finished painting the main bathroom! This is only the first of many projects in our house, and don't worry I won't subject you to seeing pictures of all of them!

Before....
After...
Ok, ok, it's just a coat of brown paint, but hey, it was exciting...probably only because it WAS the first project!

Sarah discovers Maine

Cory's parents went up to Maine this weekend and invited us to go along with them. Since Cory is a workin' man now, and I am still without a job, I decided to join them! I flew to Boston and Cory's parents picked me up and we drove up to Maine. Along the way we stopped at a popular lobster shack in Cape Elizabeth and ate fresh Maine seafood! It was my first time tasting lobster. The lobster shack is right on the coast so I got to see the Northeast Atlantic ocean for the first time! The trees were changing colors so the views of the mountains were beautiful. We went to Acadia National Park and went up Cadillac Mountain (the highest mountain on the eastern coast), went to seal harbour and toured the famous city Bar Harbour...or as they would call it "Bah Habah." The Mainer's have such cute accents! We also saw a couple of lighthouses.Of course, I couldn't leave Maine without finding Stephen King's house! My mom loves Stephen King and I grew up with his books. Since we were staying in Bangor, (which is the city he lives in) I had to get a picture of me in front of his house! Notice the bats on his front gate. Typical Stephen King!I definitely wouldn't mind summer vacations up in Maine . We were lucky we had beautiful weather for October. But you won't catch me up there in the winter!

Cory's birthday celebration!

It was Cory's 28th birthday last Thursday and it was just the two of us to celebrate. I woke up at 6:30am (which, to those who know me, is a fantastic feat in and of itself) to make Cory breakfast. We did the traditional birthday cake and presents in the evening. Cory had finished off a whole sheet cake the week before, so I decided to buy a baby cake, since he already filled his quota for the month!
Cory's big birthday present from his parents and me was tickets to the Carolina Panthers vs New Orleans Saints NFL game this weekend. It was in Charlotte, NC, which was about 1 1/2 hrs away. The game was close at times, but we are confident that it was our continued support and screaming that made the Panthers VICTORIOUS!!

The new addition!

Say hello to the new addition to our family...our new car! It is a 2007 Toyota Yaris, hot off the boat from Japan. We are loyal Toyota fans. Since we left Cory's old car in Nebraska (sniff sniff!) Cory has been driving my car to work. Now I get my car back and Cory gets to drive the girly car! It gets 40 mpg and is quite peppy. We had to wait a month for it to arrive from Japan since the 5-speeds are hard to come by in America. I'm so glad I'm not stranded at home anymore. So when I get a job, I'm ready to go! We picked it up today and it had 5 miles on it. I hope the new car smell lasts a while!

Pilot Mountain State Park

Pilot Mountain
Pilot Mountain State Park is about 25 miles north of where we live in NC. As you can see, it is a big mountain jutting out of the ground out of nowhere! There is a lot to do there, rock climb, hike, picnic, canoe on the river, etc, etc. We decided to do something fun this weekend but wanted to start off slow, so we had a little picnic and hiked some trails. It was beautiful! And free!
We hiked around the mountain and saw tons of hawks flying overhead. The closer we got to the top, the closer those hawks were! The weather was perfect for hiking, about 83 degrees and sunny.

This picture was taken at the Little Pinnacle Overlook, which is a tinier mountain off to the side. It gives a great view of the valley below. We live right next to wine country so the countryside is beautiful!

Meanwhile back at home, I am still looking for work and Cory is working full time at Hugh Chatham hospital in Elkin, NC, about 35 miles Northeast of us. We will be working on house projects soon (ie. painting) so stay tuned!

Moving to North Carolina!

We have left the great state of Nebraska to enjoy warmer (and more humid!) climates in Winston-Salem, North Carolina! Cory signed on with a job at Speechcenter, Inc. a few months ago and graduated with his Master of Science degree a few weeks ago from University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

I sadly left my great job at Benchmark Biolabs, Inc. Here are a couple pics of me with some friends that I will greatly miss!

As of right now, I am still currently unemployed and looking for a new job at Wake Forest University here, in the medical research field.

Moving day was fun! We packed up our 16 foot Budget truck with everything we own and drove 20 hours across the country to North Carolina. Our rabbit, Chloe, did not enjoy being cooped up in the car for so long!

We have moved into our first house! There is still alot we have to do to it, but it's slowly feeling more like home. I have to learn how to interior decorate now! I'm already seeing how I want to paint the different rooms. The kitchen unfortunately came with some hideous wallpaper so someday (soon!) we have to destroy it. What were the previous owner's thinking?

North Carolina is very pretty and there are a lot of trees everywhere! The only downside is that there are more bugs than I am used to!

Our first blog!

We decided to start a blog so everyone can see what we're up to in our exciting lives! Now we just have to figure out how to use this thing...
