the latest from sausalito

ben called me from work this morning and asked if i would like to go out to dinner tonight. i said yes ofcourse. he had made reservations at a cute place in mill valley that we had seen 'coming soon' 2 years ago when we lived in sausalito before. i had forgotten about it. way to go ben.

we loved the ambiance of the building - old brick and stone building with a winding walkway through the middle of a block, the restaurant broken up into both sides with outdoor seating interspersed, giving it a romantic, gothic yet cozy feel. apparently it is owned by a locally famed chef (tyler something) in partnership with sammy hagar - who i only equate with cabo wabo, i don't even know what band he is from. i'll google it later. the sign says french cuisine, i think they changed their mind post paying for signage, because its actually a true american steakhouse.

because we did this last minute, the only reservation available was for 5:45, early bird special it was. this was actually perfect because i have been feeling cooped up this weekend as we were dogsitting and i was not comfortable leaving both beasts in the house alone and ben worked all weekend. i got out of the house for morning workouts on sat and sun and a walk through town on sun afternoon and that was it. stir crazy.

anyway, ben was home at 5 and we got all diddied up for date night in the burbs and arrived on time to our reservation (this is how i know we needed to get out!). the service was slow moving, but this is what we were craving - a long drawn out meal to enjoy each other. the rolls came in individual small pans with some pesto and plenty of salt, yum. luckily, the waiter raved about the sweet pea soup, so ben was enticed enough to forget about the crab cakes and deviled eggs that he was craving (yuk.) we were leery of the quail egg and ham puree sitting in the bowl before the soup was poured over, but it was amazing.

we ordered our entrees and were just getting comfortable with our neighbors being able to hear everything we could say and vice versa, when a call came for ben. work. ben's co worker was having a baby and running out the door, ben needed to go into work in 1 hour. grr. i grudgingly tempered my annoyance by acknowledging that the birth of his baby max may be more important than our date night. we called over the waiter and requested the check with the meal, and he offered to bring the food in doggy bags. we decided that was entirely too depressing....so we would gorge ourselves quickly. much better.

so now i am blogging and ben just sat down to direct. half of my perfectly prepared filet wrapped in bacon with caramelized onions and a tasty béarnaise sits in the fridge alongside the roasted mushrooms and duck fat hash browns. we decided round 2 of the meal will commence around 10 pm -- european style. so wipe your tears aside my sympathetic family, my life will go on - and we'll even be able to pair it with ice cream sandwiches from the freezer later. not exactly the waiters recommended european style, salad to finish. is salad at the end supposed to make you feel better about the obscene intake of fat throughout the rest of the meal?

this meal was also our 'kick off' to the marathon training that we are embarking on, and it officially starts tomorrow. i have been running short runs for the past 2 weeks to get my body comfortable with the idea that running might be OK after work, in place of the comfortable 10 foot walk to the closet for comfy pants and quickly planting myself on the couch for hgtv or bravo for the night. its been a good change so far, so i only hope the increase in intensity over the coming months will feel good as well. i will say, i was at the grocery at 9 am today grabbing a cart and wondering if my legs would ever stop being just a little sore, all the time. we shall see.

ben and jack are well. my job is going great - i really do like going to work most days (not everyday) and i'm learning. i found myself leisurely reading an industry magazine saturday afternoon. nubbalicious.

sean, bridget and the girls came over yesterday afternoon for some sand castle building and a picnic lunch. those girls are growing up so fast and are the happiest and most articulate little ladies you ever met. friedie has deemed my house the 'plant house'. which i mostly love because i always thought it was weird to keep live plants indoors...things change. i also love the fact that friedie announced that she was grumpy that morning, yet she managed to be all smiles through her 'grumpiness'. i need to get my camera out more often, because i have no photos to post....note to self, will improve.

so there's my little life. i love you all and hope you had a relaxing long weekend.

Greetings from Denver

Hi Everyone
It's been way too long since our last post. We enjoy reading the blog daily and hearing everybody's happenings. Jake and I have been enjoying the spring weather in Denver, although it's been unusually rainy. We had a nice time visiting with Abby and Ben a couple months ago and seeing the Rourkes before they left for NH.
I recently got a new job with IKEA. I am a senior visual merchandiser and today was my second day. I am very excited to start with a new company and grow. I have a feeling I am really going to enjoy it. The Centennial store opens at the end of July. The unfortunate result of taking a new job at the beginning of the summer means no vacation for a while. We are unable to attend my family's reunion, however Jake will take a week in June to travel to Michigan to spend time with Nate and Allison and their new baby. We recently made arrangements for Gabe's wedding in November, so we are really looking forward to Key West together. Hopefully we can also make a few shows this summer.
I have been busy with a couple freelance design projects. At the moment, I am really into making beaded bracelets. I've been giving most away to friends and family, but sold 5 bracelets to acquaintances thus far. Jake and I went to a nice steak dinner for his birthday which was a treat. He has been busy with work since the weather is getting warmer.
We love you all and think of you often. Here are some pics of life in the past few months.

Selah Days Parade / Sidney the Cheerleader

Close up of the embroidery on her duffel bag
We sat with The Hatfield's some friends of ours from the ward

Sidney made the high school cheer leading squad a few weeks ago. She is having fun with it. The only drawback is that Selah High School's fight song is the same as Ohio State's.

Last Saturday she marched in the Selah Days parade. Its a fun parade and we endured a brief rain storm.

A beautiful day in May -- a day late to post! Happy Anniversary anyway:)

Well, the sun finally came out and blue skies above :)  I had forgotten what they looked like. So we took a family drive to Maine -- as in Kennebunkport and had Lobster Rolls for lunch. Yum. The towns are very quaint and lovely along the Atlantic Coast, and we had a leisurely drive through York, Ogunquit, Kittery, Eliot, Wells, etc. Alice and Gus were great travelers and Andy was our chauffer.

Today's blue skies remind me of a beautiful day in Birmingham Michigan 17 years ago. A backyard wedding, a lovely bride (and groom) and a great celebration. Congratulations Paige and Greg! We love you.

We continue to make progress here at the Rourkes. Monday I start making the drapes for the dining room and then hopefully will have enough time to paint some casual furniture for the family room part of the kitchen. On Thursday we head to Birmingham for a visit with the Learys -- this is the best, roaming from one family to the next! and the next.....

 Love my sister....

Birmingham

I am having a hard time posting pictures but needless to say, our lives are all about Lacrosse right now. Kate, Peter and Caroline are all neck deep in LAX right now which translates into Greg and I running from one game to the next. Kate is a playing goal for Birmingham United Womens Lacrosse which is Seaholm/Groves combined and having a tremendous season. They have lost only one game to Marian - painful - but still stand an exceptional shot at State Champs. She was recruited for Elite Team (Detroit Lacrosse Club) for the off-season. Peter is playing for Warrior Lacrosse(Brother Rice feeder) - he plays longpole defense and is bruised from wrist to shoulder/ankle to thigh. Lacrosse beats hockey for full and brutal contact - Pete loves it. Caroline picked it up this year and is learning the basics - I am pretty confident that it will eclipse soccer and am so glad....sorry, but hate soccer! Ashleigh is being actively recruited for LAX but she maintains that it seems a masochistic sport to her....my smart one. She is in the pool every afternoon preparing for the summer season. Peter is talking about swimming for the first time in 3 years and I am anticipating a small scale Titantic reenactment when he takes the first plunge....just the thought of that big boy in a Speedo makes me feel weird. Anything grosser than men's thighs exposed? No.
We are very excited for Max and Corey's wedding - any time that the family gathers is monumental. We are all looking forward to it!
Feel free to post anyone - I check this every day about 12 times.....bring it!

Loved talking to Brian last night - all sounds relatively well. Glad that Paige seems to be on the path to health - all will be well.

One More...

15 and 17 - I can hardly stand it.
