It's a bit too early for GARF, but Terry, aka Lady Raven, is at a Faire in Florida, and is low on mousies and needs more for the second weekend. I hardly ever watch TV, but today was a Ken Burns marathon on PBS (Thomas Jefferson, and then 4 hours of Lewis & Clark), and then I found WKRP in Cincinnati. And now I know who Captain Tight Pants (Mal) in Firefly reminded me of -- WKRP's Station Manager. Amazing resemblance.
I loved that show when it was new back in the 70's, and it is still hilarious now, but with an overlay of nostalgia. I had dated a former DJ a couple of years before, so all the radio stuff was familiar, and although the show was set in Ohio, it was based on WQXI, my favorite pops AM station in Atlanta back then. And OMG, one of the plot points was that Dr. Fever had beat up and demolished a phone, and he was scared to death the Phone Police were coming after him. You must understand, oh you children out there, that back then, Ma Bell owned all the telephones, and the rent on the phone was part of the monthly bill. There are improvements now, but I tell you back then, the phones did not break. My sister has only this past year replaced the wall phone that was first installed in our house in 1964 -- nearly 45 years of good service. Can't get that now.

( Cynicism in action.Collapse ) I've had all sorts of contemplative, witty entries written in my head while I was at work this past few weeks, but as you can see, none have made it to LJ, but today is a lovely day, with a slow, steady, soaking rain, just right for savoring life, and maybe even writing a little. Go to Pop Culture Madness http://www.popculturemadness.com/Music/Pop-Modern/2006.html and select the year you became 18, or graduated from high school. Snip the top 50 songs from the list and paste it in your journal. Bold the ones you like, strike the ones you dislike, italicize the ones you know but don't care one way or another, and leave the ones you don't know as plain text. This is the year I graduated, but 1970 had good tunes too. ( 1969's Greatest HitsCollapse )

After my Halloween post, inglenook wondered if there were any pictures around from that production of Lysistrata. And yes, there were a few in the back pages of the University of Montevallo yearbook. It was 1970, and although the pictures are black and white, you must imagine the costumes in their Peter Max pastel glory. Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, I present to you Lysistrata, c. 1970. And yes, I am in the crowd scene in the first picture. Stage Right. When we saw these pictures for the first time in the yearbook, we learned that the muslin of the costumes had acted like a backlit scrim when our nylon undies were gleaming in stagelights. Ooops. ( Cut for eye bleeding potential. Collapse )Feel free to laugh but be gentle!!!
