Nisga’a Nation marks 22nd anniversary of landmark treaty

The Nisga’a Lisims Government (NLG) along with the provincial and federal governments commemorated the 22nd anniversary of the Nisga’a Final Agreement.

The landmark treaty, signed on May 11, 2000 after 113 years of lobbying, is B.C.’s first modern treaty. It was also the first in Canada to provide constitutional certainty in respect to Indigenous peoples’ Section 35 right to self-government.

Northwest B.C. cop reflects on her 25 years of RCMP service

In 2015, Const. Angela Rabut was receiving an award at a ceremony, when a stranger came forward and asked her if she could give her a hug.

Rabut was pleasantly surprised but obliged to the request. The woman told Rabut she was the reason her life changed for the better many years ago.

B.C. prosecutors failing public says City of Terrace after repeat offenders back on streets

The City of Terrace is calling on municipal lobby groups and the province to re-examine Crown Counsel’s priorities after witnessing a severe uptick in criminal activities.

The council unanimously passed a resolution to send to the North Central Local Government Association (NCLGA) for its 2022 annual general meeting and convention.

‘Our community is in a severe crisis’: Crime impacting businesses in northwest B.C. city

Terrace business owners say they continue to bear the brunt of the city’s myriad social issues and increasing crime.

Liz Smaha, executive director of the Kermodei Tourism Society is calling on Terrace’s mayor and council to raise these concerns before the Union of BC Municipalities and North Central Local Government Association (NCLGA).

“Our community is in a severe crisis; our business community can not sustain this,” Smaha told the council in a Feb. 23 letter.

 British Columbia: An Untold History – filmmaker nominated for Canadian Screen Award

Northwest B.C. based filmmaker Michael Bourquin has been nominated for a Canadian Screen Award for his work on the four-part documentary, British Columbia: An Untold History.

Bourquin shares the nomination with his colleague Alfonso Chin in the category of Best Photography (documentary or factual) announced last week by The Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television.

British Columbia: An Untold History has also been nominated for Best History Documentary Program or Series, Best Direction, Best Documentary Series, Best Editorial Research.
