âBetter safe than sorry,â my mother warned me many times. Most mothers have said something similar: âSafety firstâ or âlook before you leap.â Yorkshire writer Charlotte BrontÃŦ, went one-step farther: âLook twice before you leap.â Japanese mothers may say, âYudan taitekiâ: âRashness is your enemy.â
Precaution is common sense and would have prevented virtually all of Earthâs current ecological crises. Instead, in the stampede to plunder Earthâs bounty and accrue wealth, humanity has actually made itself poorer by degrading the real wealth, Earthâs rivers, oceans, soil, atmosphere, and biological diversity.
