The March 25 SRD Board meeting was certainly memorable, with between 80-100 residents of Quadra Island and Area C crowding into the boardroomâs public gallery and overflowing into the foyer. They were there to observe as the Board considered a report regarding adding Quadra Island (or all of Area C) as annual tax paying participants of the Strathcona Gardens Recreation Service. That topic is what this report focuses on.

Expanding Funding Opportunities for the Quadra Island Foundation

Over the past few years, the Quadra Island Foundation has channeled hundreds of thousands of dollars into the local economy. Now, thanks to a change in their charitable status, they may be able to do a great deal more.
Marc Doll, Vice President in Charge of Communications, explained:
âWe have had charitable status since our inception. The change is in the scope of that status. Previously, we were only able to work with charities within a very, very defined set of parameters. Our charitable purposes really limited us to only working with established charities on the island. We couldn’t work with individuals or societies. It handcuffed us, so even when we gave out our small neighborhood grants, we had to work with the Rec Society because we didn’t actually have the ability to funnel that money directly to people who were not registered charities.â

Wharves
Thereâs big news about the Surge Narrows and Owen Bay wharves of Area C: the Board has approved a contract to repair the wharves, and the work will begin in the 2025 âfall fish windowâ. This seemingly simple statement has been more than a decade coming, and will be welcome news to many wharf users, especially folks in the Outer Discovery Islands.

Earthday & the New Exhibits at Wild Cortes

It was Earth Day at Wild Cortes, Cortes Islandâs centre for natural history, community science and collaborative conservation.
âIt is a very exciting place to be, with new displays coming in every year, always on Earth Day. That’s probably the most important thing to say. It’s Earth Day, so let’s celebrate,â explained Sabina leader Mense, a professional advisor to Wild Cortes.
The centrepiece of this year’s displays is the âHumpback Comebackâ section highlighting the stunning recovery of Humpback Whales in our local waters.
