Cox Orange

The Cox Orange, also known as Cox Orange Nettles, Russet Pippin, Cox's Pomeranians Pepping or Improved Muskatrenette, in England Cox's Orange Pippin, is a variety of the cultivated apple. The apple was discovered in the early 19th century in England as a seedling of a ribston pepping. In the United Kingdom, it is one of the most popular apple varieties and is often seen as a typical representative of the English way of life. Cox Orange has a brown-orange color on a yellow-green background. It is firm, but not crisp. As a winter apple the Cox Orange needs well-ventilated soils with high water capacity, moist summers with little heat and damp winters. It grows best in a maritime climate. In Germany and Switzerland it is cultivated only on 1% of the area used for cultivating apple trees. In the United Kingdom, Cox Orange was the dominant varietal until 2011, with more than half of the area remaining until the beginning of the 21st century.
