Fistula

Fistula

The fistula is a liturgical device which can be used in the Roman rite of the Catholic Church. This is a suction tube, usually made of silver, with the aid of which the converted wine is drunk from the cup in the communion of the laity (sometimes the priest). This procedure should initially reduce the risk of spillage. Once spread throughout the whole of the West, the Fistula, with the renunciation of the communion of the laity up to the liturgical form of 1970, was used only at the solemn papal mass for Pope and Cardinal deacon in its original use. Moreover, it was still widely used in the extraction of wine. The current measurement book provides an alternative to the use of the fistula in the chalice communion of the laity (General Introduction to the Roman Messbuch (AEM), No. 248ff).
