A cutlass, breakwater or malecón is a coastal structure whose main purpose is to protect the coast or a port from the action of sea waves or weather. They are usually calculated for a given wave height with a specified return period. The calculation and design of a maritime structure of this size, as well as of dikes, molles or springs, and other maritime structures, is designed by specialists in hydraulic engineering. Cutlery is also called a part of the pillars of a bridge, which has the purpose of sustaining the water pressure. Un cortaolas, rompeolas o malecón es una estructura costera que tiene por finalidad principal proteger la costa o un puerto de la acción de las olas del mar o del clima. Son calculados, normalmente, para una determinada altura de ola con un periodo de retorno especificado. El cálculo y diseño de una estructura marítima de este porte, así como de diques, molles o muelles, y otras estructuras marítimas, es diseñado por especialistas en ingeniería hidráulica. También se llaman cortaolas a una parte de los pilares de un puente, que tiene la finalidad de sustentar la presión del agua.
