Ostiario

Ostiario

The doorkeeper or ostiario was the clergyman who had received the first of the minor orders and was in charge of opening and closing the church door, as well as guarding it, calling to take communion to the worthy and to keep the sacred things: it is the Guardian of the Blessed Sacrament that is hidden in the tabernacle. At the ceremony of ordination, the bishop or archbishop presented the aspirant with the two keys of the temple on a plate and, while the aspirant touched them, said to him: "Act in such a way that you can give an account to God of the sacred things that are Keep under these two keys ... "The order of Ostiary was the ostiariado, and was suppressed along with the other four minor orders in 1972, as is recorded in the motu proprio of Paul VI. However, order continues to confer order to candidates for the priesthood who are part of societies of apostolic life that follow the extraordinary form of the Roman rite. Do not confuse this term, which is always written without h, with hostiary: container where the unconsecrated hosts are kept, or the mold that is used to make them.
