Siliqua

Síliqua

Siliqua is a type of dry and dehiscent fruit, consisting of 2 carpels. In its interior there is a flat septum, where the seeds are inserted, in both their faces. This septum, in the opening of the fruit, stands out from both carpels, exposing the seeds to the wind. This type of fruit is not very common, occurring especially in some genera of Bignoniaceae, like example in Tabebuia and Tecoma, popularly known as ipês. The fruits of the silica type are generally elongated. When shorter, the length of approximately the same size or up to three times smaller than the width are called silicas.
