brîndúșă (-șe),s. f.1. Plantă, floarea-brumei (Colchicum autumnale). – 2. Varietăți de șofran (Crocus aureus sau heuffelianus sau reticulatus). Origine necunoscută. Este pus în legătură cu sb.brnduša, brenduška „șofran”, dalm.brndjuška „șofran”, rut.brenduška, brandjuši, pe care Vittorio Bertoldi, Un ribelle nel regno de’ fiori, i nomi romanzi del Colchicum autumnale, Ginebra 1923, p. 61, îl pune în legătură cu numele date în sl. vacii, și pe care DAR și Scriban le propun ca etimoane ale rom. Totuși, cuvintele par străine de atmosfera lingvistică sl., și ar putea proveni din rom. (Candrea, Elementele, 406; Giuglea, Dacor., III, 567-73). Căutîndu-le alte explicații, Philippide, Principii, propune un lat. *brundusia; Giuglea, Dacor., III, 567, derivă cuvîntul de la o rădăcină autohtonă *brend- „umflat”, iar Pușcariu, Lr., 176, probabil influențat de ipoteza anterioară, îl consideră cuvînt autohton. Este posibil să existe o legătură între brîndușe și brînză, dar nu este ușor de lămurit, în stadiul actual al cercetării.
