![]() âThe truth is you donât know what is going to happen tomorrow. Life is a crazy ride, and nothing is guaranteed.â Marshall Bruce Mathers III (born October 17, 1972), professionally known as Eminem, is an American rapper from Detroit. He is credited with popularizing hip hop in Middle America and is regarded as among the greatest rappers of all time. His success is considered to have broken racial barriers to the acceptance of white rappers in popular music. While much of his transgressive work during the late 1990s and early 2000s made him a controversial figure, he came to be a representation of popular angst of the American underclass and has been cited as influencing many musical artists. Eminem became interested in hip hop following the discovery of Ice-T's "Reckless" from the Breakin' soundtrack (a gift from his uncle Ronnie). He entered the rap scene as a teenager under the stage name M&M that would later evolve to his current alias. His debut album Infinite (1996) was independently released through Web Entertainment, selling around 1,000 copies, which was regarded as a commercial failure. In 1997, he was invited to the Rap Olympics, hosted in Los Angeles. The winner would receive a Rolex watch and $500; Em at the time was evicted from his house and needed the money. However, he came in second place, which devasted him greatly. Unbeknownst to him, he gave a copy of The Slim Shady EP to Interscope Records intern Dean Geistlinger, which made its way to Dr. Dre. Eminem ended up signing with Aftermath Entertainment and released his second album, The Slim Shady LP (1999), which featured his infamous alter ego Slim Shady. Due to its explicit content, it garnered widespread controversy with accusations of misogyny, subjected to lawsuits, and labeled a "provocateur" by the media. |
