Wow, so this comm has been silent for... almost two years, but hopefully most of you are still out there, somewhere.

Here's my problem: I'm writing a plotty AU fic told entirely from the perspective of character A because one of the themes of the fic is A gradually uncovering the reality of the world he's living in and how character B fits into it.  Problem is, B is ~mysterious~ and doesn't talk much because of AU reasons, but there's a LOT of his backstory that I need to tell.  Some of it I can slowly dole out or hint at from other sources, but a lot of it has to come directly from B because he's the only living witness.

So basically I'm trying not to write a series of boring, OOC dialogue infodumps.  I'm toying with the idea of writing flashbacks from B's POV, but I'm not sure how I could fit those in without it coming across as jarring and awkward.  (And no, I can't use a handy-dandy mindmeld :oP)  Anyone have any ideas/thoughts/suggestions?

I just finished A Six Feet Under fic that I feel very passionately about, but that was very hard to write and that for some reason, even though I'm done, I just...

Alright. I want you all to tell me how you feel about second-person narrative.

The reaction I've seen to second person, particularly when it comes to discussion of fanfic, is pretty much "WTF are you doing," ranging from "That doesn't even make sense, who uses second person?" to "It can be effective, but who the hell do you think you are, Faulkner?"

Personally I think the most effective type of second-person I've come across (that wasn't something that worked pretty apparently with second-person, like in the form of a letter) is basically a separated first person; it has a tone of self-analysis or one of denial that sort of implicitly implies character growth or conflicted identity...except that when I bring this up people don't seem to know what I'm talking about. And I feel it's one of those things that has been so badly done and abused in a lot of fandom work that it's just not something it's wise to try to use because people will back-button really fast. I DON'T KNOW. Talk to me?

Any examples of fanfic where you didn't even blink at it because you thought it was effective? Any thoughts on why you like or hate reading it?

Okay, this time I have a question for all the fanfic READERS out there.  I am confronted yet again with the quandary of the long WIP -- to post or not to post (before it's completely written)?  In that vein, I have some questions about your reading habits...

I myself fall somewhere in the "I'll read it if I know and like the author" camp, and my ideal scenario for a longer fic is substantial parts posted over a series of a few days.  Confronted with a 50,000 word behemoth, I usually bookmark it as "READ ME" and it sits in my Delicious, gathering (metaphorical dust).

After noticing the amount of warnings-related rants in FFR, I decided to make a community dedicated to asking and answering questions on everything warnings related. Posting access is members only, but we currently have an open membership.

Hi there!

Do any of you lovely lads and lasses have a good recommendation for me as far as general timeline/world-building details in the Star Trek 'verse goes? In particular, I would love information about the Eugenics War, World War III, Tarsus, and the impact on the timeline that the Narada destroying the Kelvin has on Reboot verse. An overview of the differences between the Reboot timeline and the TOS timeline would be hugely helpful.

This is in reference for my Big Bang fic, which is set in a slight AU of Reboot-verse. (Hur.) I've looked around Memory Alpha, but I'm not having much luck; perhaps I'm just not looking in the right place.

I seem to recall reading somewhere that one of the BIG differences of Reboot-verse is that the existence of the Romulans & the Romulan Star Empire was discovered MUCH sooner than in TOS, and this is important politically & for background in my fic. But man, I cannot find into on it ANYWHERE. (I could also use a website/book that gives me some background or timeline on Vulcan's history, but the other things are slightly more important for the time being.)

Are there novelizations or websites someone could point me do? Does the novelization of the 2009 ST film go into any of this? I own "Spock's World" and "Sarek," the novels, but I haven't yet read them (ugh RL ugh).

Would you guys warn for a sex act while one person is asleep? If so, is there some kind of word or phrase you could use besides "sex act while one person is asleep"? I feel like that's a bit spoiler-y. I don't want to use "dub-con" for various reasons, even though I know it could technically apply. But the person would definitely be consenting if they were awake, and in fact they might even wake up halfway through and be like "oh, this is nice". And it's not penetrative sex or anything like that. I don't think it's dubious enough that I would want to risk scaring people off with the dub-con warning. But I also feel like it might be something people are sensitive about. What do you think?

I enjoy writing RPS. I enjoy reading RPS. I don't have much of a problem with the myriad moral issues involved with using real people as characters to do with as we wish.
