Tonight, I went along to the combined Tin Duck* and Ditmar** Awards Ceremony. And there were lots of worthy winners, and it would be great if I could remember exactly who they all are. But there is a really exciting thing that I haven't seen happen before.

At least three of the winners are Indigenous.

From memory:

  • Ryan Griffen, along with Wolf Bylsma and Emily Smith, won the Tin Duck for Best Production for the first issue of the Cleverman comic. (This might be the first time that a Tin Duck has been awarded to two guests of the convention -- Ryan and Emily)

  • Claire Coleman won the Tin Duck for Long (Professional?) Written Work for Terra Nullius***

  • Ambelin Kwaymullina won the William Atheling Jr award for criticism for "Reflecting on Indigenous Worlds, Indigenous Futurisms and Artificial Intelligence"

* Western Australian Science Fiction Achievement Awards. There were four? categories this year -- professional long work, professional short work, production in any medium, something something fan production?
** Australian Science Fiction Achievement Awards. There are also some other awards that go with the Ditmars that have specific names, but I'm grouping them together because they happen together.
*** 1. This is the book I bought today, before I knew it was award winning.

Have just survived the annual primary school Graduation Debacle for another year. Yet again, I'm tired, cranky and sore, and really really wish that there was some aspect that could be pared down even more to make for an evening I can better cope with.

Mind you, part of the problem this year was the arriving there at my closest approximation to a flat out sprint. On this occasion, it had to do with the end of term skating 'comp', which started at four, and I dragged poor youngest off the ice as soon as zer awards were called (bronze, out of three 'how do you tell the difference' performances), which meant that we were at least out of the car when we heard the opening music. And then dashing around to one side of the stage area only to work out that middlest (who theoretically had youngest's costume, given that I had a. abandoned zer to get to the school independently, and b. rung to request that the costume went with zer because there was no way we could get home in the available time frame) was on the other side, and getting there only to have youngest's teacher wave the costume at me from where we had started. And we were out at the 'Dip', which would be an oval, but for the somewhat sunken section to one side which makes a barely passable amphitheatre, which means no good place to change. This at least I had planned for - blanket for sitting on was wrapped around youngest for the changing within.

This was then followed by both kids getting the Achievement awards for their respective years, reasonable performances in their respective dance numbers (artisanat has some very brief bits of movie), and dinner at one of the local Chinese restaurants where eldest was somewhat distressed to not be part of the decision making process, but we got three dishes plus rice, and zie didn't have a current thing to celebrate. And then the kids got to have fried icecream. Artisanat made a token protest about tis, but then got most of youngest's when zie managed about three mouthfuls.

All in all, a good evening, even if the muscles in my lower right hand back cramped hours ago, and haven't quite released yet.
