The original draft of this is from March, which I discovered when I went to add the last story to it.

â€Ķ I have far more stories open than I have a chance of reading; this will be whatever I get through, with whatever level of commentary appeals at the point I’m writing. No ratings, that is more effort than I have spoons for. Thank you to anyone who has shared links to short fiction in the last 6-12 months, I have almost certainly got those lists somewhere to go through if the stories aren’t here.

Suradanna and the Sea - Originally published in The Fantasist, December 2016. - Complicated time travel

Counting Casualties (Yoon Ha Lee) - battles in space with large, far reaching consequences. Ish.

The Cure (Malinda Lo) horror story set in a nebulous past where a young woman not wishing to be married is reason for being put in an asylum, although it is more complicated than that. (content notes for medial abuse and forced institutionalisation)

Ghost Town (Malinda Lo) - small town ghost story.

Flannelfeet (Ursula Whitcher) - Teen attempts to describe the experience of being in a portal fantasy.

fred_mouse: text 'survive ~ create' below an image of a red pencil and a swirling rainbow ribbon (create)

This is one of the 'go look at it' links. I have no idea what it is that I was planning on doing with this, but it looks to be a productivity site: miro.com. I'm setting up a 'just me' kind of something. Having told it I work in logistics and data science (because you have to say something to get through, and I was all 'yeah, whatever'; the second was because it 'tailors' the options to the job type)

observations

  • the set up is slow.
  • it gave me six options, which included brainstorming, meetings, ?development, and whatever the option I picked.
  • the same list of 'use cases' turns up in a subsequent menu bar: meetings and workshops, brainstorming and ideation, agile workflows, mapping and diagramming, research and design, strategy and planning.

.. I'm not in the market for another electronic organisation tool. I have three that I use at varying levels (trello, habitica, Things) and I'm looking to drop that down to two, because one of them doesn't get used (or rather, two of them get used in ways that overlap to the point that I might as well phase one of them out).

Is there a racism 101 community on DW? I've just worked out that the community I thought I was following is in fact 'racism_101_feed' (or similar), and has no posts at all.

I was going to post the following two links there, because I found them useful reading. You mob get to read them instead.

4 Ways White People Can Process Their Emotions Without Hijacking the Conversation on Racial Justice

103 Things White People Can Do for Racial Justice - I'm partway through this one; my perception is written by a white American.

fred_mouse: pencil drawing of mouse sitting on its butt reading a large blue book (book)

clearing out my notes folder, then my open tabs later, not sure how many posts that will add up to today. Some of these have been in said notes folder for weeks months

These are some of the Black-led orgs leading our fight against racism in the food and agriculture system - list looks to be USA only.

Growing up With Percy Jackson (AM Gelberg) - quick look at some of the ways that the works of Rick Riordan investigate identity, and some variations on diversity.

We can all agree that scrabble is ... - I've left out part of the title, because I think it is an inappropriate use of language, but it is obvious in the link. Article is about the resistance of some scrabble players to removing words from their tournament acceptable dictionaries.

Why time feels so weird in 2020 - this one has some interesting interactive sections that rely on visual perception; I found that at least one of the interactive sections didn't work well with my lack of coordination, which I found frustrating. But in terms of the discussion of the perception of time, it was interesting. And I learned that I measure short periods of time in breathing and toe twiddles, because each time I was asked to observe the duration something happening, I centred myself on the speed at which I was doing those two things.

My Chemical Hormone Therapy Romance - bit of a rambling discussion of self and MCR.

Representation Without Transformation: Can Hollywood Stop Changing Cartoon Characters of Color?

Collections: How Your History Gets Made

Dozens of COVID-19 vaccines are in development. Here are the ones to follow.

peoriapeoria posted a number of meta articles at the AO3 for the March Meta Matters, which I've only just got around to catching up on - these are all quite short: Power Imbalance - writing Coulson/Barton in the MCU; Meta Reading of The Flash (1990); Slash:An Essay; Responsibility - ethics in Captain America: Civil War.

The Hugos and The Raven Tower - Ann Leckie on why they withdrew The Raven Tower from the Hugo shortlist.

fred_mouse: line drawing of sheep coloured in queer flag colours with dream bubble reading 'dreamwidth' (Default)

Many of these have come from racism awareness posts, but are included here rather in the BLM post because they are predominantly about entrenched racism, rather than police brutality and the Black Lives Matters protests. I realised after I'd got quite a way through that I hadn't been noting authors or details, and I don't have the oomph to go back and add them. I've added a note to each about the where I got it from, which can be seen in the link details.

Transformative racism: The black body in fan works - OTW

We Need to Talk About Digital Blackface in Reaction GIFs - Teen Vogue

"Yes, the Evil Queen is Latina!": Racial dynamics of online femslash fandoms - OTW

Pattern recognition: A dialogue on racism in fan communities - OTW

Dog Whistles and Insults [personal profile] zvi - from 2007 (there were two follow ups, I didn't grab the links because the blog content was approximately repeating things, so I suspect the first got edited to include all that detail; I did read comments on the other two)

Downloaded, but not read (pdf) QUEER AND UNUSUAL SPACE: WHITE SUPREMACY IN SLASH FANFICTION - master's thesis.

And from this post, one of the many about Racefail: * "In a discussion of racial stereotypes, appropriation of the 'shiny bits' of other cultures without real respect or understanding of those cultures, the ongoing underrepresentation/misrepresentation of large portions of the population in fiction and other media, and the need to do better, privilege is when the most important piece of the conversation is your hurt feelings."*

How to Know You’re Not Insane (And how a Cards Against Humanity Staff Writer was fired.) - medium.

fred_mouse: pop funko of Jodie Whittaker as Doctor Who (thirteenth doctor)

Changing the ABC's pronunciation guidance on Indigenous words - this is the most useful summary of Indigenous pronunciation that I've seen outside academic texts.

A Feud in Wolf-Kind Erotica Raises a Deep Legal Question - I'll take topics I didn't expect to see in the NY Times for $100, thanks. Yes, this is about Omegaverse kink, and people trying to claim fan tropes as intellectual property.

COPYRIGHT: THE ALPHA AND OMEGA(VERSE) - this is an older article about the previous topic, which goes into legal details from the previous proceedings.

What Heroes Do: Queer-Coding, Slut-Shaming, and Heroism on a Trash Planet (illwynd, thebookhunter) - meta about Thor Ragnarok. Contains many spoilers.

The Tiny “Spite Triangle” That Marks a Century-Old Grudge Against New York City

Seven of Diamonds - cute bit of Western Australian history I hadn't previously heard of.

An appreciation of Laura Shapiro, a historian who found her place in the kitchen

This one might be a duplicate -- I've had several goes at reading it. I've put it in this post, not the virus post, because I think it is more generally applicable, and it is has passing references to the current situation Pandemic! Productivity! Life! Hacks! (from a deeply unproductive & freaked out person)

Retro Maps - Perth, WA, survey maps from the early 1900s overlaid on the current city. The actual map is here and gives a fascinating sense of the way that the city has changed from being long and narrow along the Swan/Avon to being much more up and down the coast. However, it isn't comprehensive, given that the area I grew up, the townsite in was established in 1901, and there are no overlays for that area.

fred_mouse: pencil drawing of mouse sitting on its butt reading a large blue book (book)

Howl-ever It Moves You: Diana Wynne Jones and Hayao Miyazaki Do the Same Work With Different Stories (Elyse Martin) - great compare and contrast two versions of the story, and how they fit into the creators story telling traditions.

Arnott's has released its recipe for Scotch Finger - I’m not convinced, but I’ve still sent the link to Youngest to see what they make of it (ours will be gf, so probably entirely not-quite-right)

Classic SF With Absolutely No Agenda Whatsoeverâ€Ķ - James Davis Nicoll sticks their tongue firmly in cheek.

47 Hacks People With ADD/ADHD Use To Stay On Track - I’m not great with lists like this but I flicked through and there are some interesting ideas, whether you are ADHD or not.

Fic, Interrupted - The unfinished history of works in progress (Caroline Crampton) - mostly about fanfic, but also delves into the history of serialised fiction.

AO3 - What's Going on with Disney and Fanworks? - there've been some interesting takes on what the new Disney TOS mean; this looks at the probable legal status of user generated content. There are some interesting bits in the comments, but there is also wank bait.

Wired - 21 of the best fantasy books everyone should read - if you like trawling lists of books. However, you might be like me, and sprain your eyeballs in disagreement. Frustratingly, at the top it says 'series' but there are multiple non-series options listed. I did not find anything new to me that I wanted to put on my list. However, for lovers of Phat Phantasy, it is potentially a good list.

I've been putting these aside for a while, to try and have a single post of covid related links. So, how 'up to date' these are will differ. linky linky )

Take Me to Some Twilight Land - James Davis Nicoll reviews Arthur C Clarke's Rendezvous with Rama. Interesting look back at a book that won a lot of awards at the time.

from [community profile] poetry The First Lines of Emails I've Received While Quarantining by Jessica Salfia - presumably this poem is available somewhere the poet will get hits, but I've only seen copies of it.

I'm procrastinating by lying on the bed and reading open tabs/bookmarked for later. Presented here in no particular order:

The Fremen Mirage we are investigating is the assumption that these poorer, less settled, less specialized peoples – the Fremen – tend to be far more militarily effective, or ‘morally pure’ than the more wealthy, settled, complex or ‘decadent’ societies they compete with.

For Meadows reviews: Tom Hooper’s Cats: A Study In Vogon Poetry - long, but well worth it. Does contain spoilers if you don't want to know how the movie differs from the stage performances.

at The NewYorker: A suspense novelist's trail of deceptions - about Dan Mallory, of whom I knew nothing. The story is very creepy. Long, and lots of fake cancer, which got to the point that I was skipping those sections.

And a palate cleanser: Amy discovers Jo's A)3 handle and drags her in the March family groupchat - what it says on the tin.

Salvador Dalí & Walt Disney’s Short Animated Film, Destino, Set to the Music of Pink Floyd - brief article has a version with added Pink Floyd music, while this version at Youtube has the original music written by Mexican songwriter Armando Dominguez and performed by Dora Luz. Well worth watching both versions, because the music does change the tale being told.

Auntie Sandra's Cabin: Why No One Should Be Surprised Sandra Cisneros Endorsed American Dirt - gatekeeping and performative ethnicity and issues related.

How renewable energy projects are revitalising rural towns - absolutely amazing pic of sheep grazing around the solar panels, also some interesting details about solar in Victoria.

Puberty blockers can be 'life-saving' drugs for trans teens, study shows - I feel like this isn't news, except for the fact that the article is from a week ago, and the study it references (but doesn't cite) is new. Content warning: shitty treatment of trans people in general. Possible content warning: one of the 'related news' articles linked partway through may be about a transphobic murder - I haven't clicked through, but that is the impression I got from the text.

content note: the second section relates entirely to the current Australian bushfire season. I've put it below a line, and behind a cut, for those who are avoiding the topic. There are no images and any article with potentially disturbing images will be warned for.

Start of 2020 Ushers Thousands of Once-Copyrighted Works Into the Public Domain - copyright works from 1924 are now public domain. There are a number of works listed in the article, but no link to any kind of comprehensive list.

Consent in Gaming - link is to the MonteCook Games site, for 'purchase' of the pdf, which they are providing for free. Comes with a one page checklist for GMs to provide their players. I've looked at the checklist, but I've actually put the document aside to read later.

Fiction: A Square of Flesh, A Cube of Steel by Phoebe Barton. Highly recommended - going in my 'I could nominate this for a Hugo' list.

Music theory: Perfect, Imperfect, Plagal, Deceptive and Half Cadences - I encountered the phrase 'plagal cadence' today, and realised that this no longer meant anything, so I went and looked it up. I feel like I 'should' spend more time on this site, relearning things I've forgotten, but I'm doing the 'I have enough on' and closed the site...

Following a more dramatic than usual food reaction^ yesterday, I'm entirely failing to get out of bed. I've managed to spend an hour on Facebook, but am now working on the Sisyphean task 'close all the tabs'. Interesting reading so far:

51 of the Best Science Fiction Books and Novels of All Time - yet another attempt at this kind of list, this one is notable for only being about 60% identifiably white men (I'm lumping the one I know to be Jewish in that list). However, I don't think any list with this few books should have more than one book by any author, so it fails there. What it does have is some recent ones I'm not familiar with, so I'm going to follow up to see whether they are going to be of interest. And it includes at least one explicitly horror, which I was pleased to see. One thing I noted - at least one of the mid 20thC books shouldn't be there because it has aged appallingly badly (I read it a few years back now, and it was icky).

Alternatively, 50 Essential Fantasy Books - I haven't done the counting here, because while I can filter by male/female appearing names, I know far less and am not willing to guess on who is/isn't white. Really good range of older fantasy here, not so sure about more recent, because outside my general area of interest/knowledge. Again, at least suggestion I disagree with, but I don't actually remember reading it, so I might be going off received bias.

The world is hooked on Australian coffee culture. This is how it got so good - I started reading assuming this was hyperbole; what I got was an interesting potted history of Australian coffee.

Claire Ryan - The Implosion of the RWA - the best links roundup I've seen on the current debacle. It appears to be a living document, as there are links on there today that I did not see yesterday.

The Future of Work: Compulsory, by Martha Wells - short fiction in the Murderbot universe.

and a video I've no more F***s to Give which has some fabulous lines in. There is also a Good Omens fanvid to this tune, but I like this one just as much. The two audience members in shot are great to watch. As to language - other than the obvious, there is also one use of ableist language I spotted. (aside: and it looks like he is playing a banjo-lele!)

Oh! and a place: Darrington's, in Vic Park - any of my local gf peeps tried them? I'm looking at doing an order there next week, and would love to know what is good. Otherwise I'm doing a 'whatever looks tasty'.
