For quite some time, I've had a couple of carbon footprint calculators bookmarked, with the intention of Doing Something with them. Today, I'm making progress on this.

The calculators are at

I'm not feeling up to doing a highly detailed anything, so am expecting to half-arse things and make wildly unfounded guesses at any number of things. Also, I'm expecting that the pandemic is going to completely muck with a number of things that might be in there, so I'll have to attempt to answer as if the world were not in a pandemic, and that maybe we will get back to the lifestyle we had before (at least in terms of travel). The reality is that I don't expect to be going to Canada any time soon, even if I'm now officially overdue on the promised 'go in winter so Youngest can skate' trip.

And because I'm doing these one at a time, and have a shocking memory for small details, my intention is to keep a running log of the various bits and pieces I've written here.

The first one asks 'how many planets do we need if everyone lives like you' and 'when is your personal overshoot day'. I'm expecting a value of 3 planets, and far too soon. Reality was 3.6 planets, with overshoot day being 11th April.

The second one has much less pretty, and looked harder to use, but also more useful -- requires actual numbers I could get but don't want to. But I ran out of oomph, so put it aside for another day. And then I decided that it was more commitment than I wanted to make, and posted this instead.

More links! I'm a) slowly closing tabs and b) reading through Stuff! I put aside for later. So this is going to be a stead stream for a while. Maybe I'll stop feeling like it is weird and unusual, and just stop putting commentary on...

ROCK STACKING, OR ‘NATURAL GRAFFITTI,’ AND ITS ECOLOGICAL IMPACT -- leave it alone, people. Take nothing but pictures, move nothing but yourself.

Answers on grant proposals if nonprofits were brutally honest with funders -- pointed honesty. I think the most heartbreaking one was the first one: 'we have an evidence based program, but you are funding innovation.'

low details again

news article on The Hijabi Lolita, and her tumblr

website that creates quilt patterns from pictures. Not *exactly* cheap (depends on how many patterns one wants, and how much one is willing to pay), but interesting.

online is IRL - fairly standard rant about the people you see on the screen usually have a real person behind them.

Tunisia hotel attack: Locals form 'human shield' to protect hotel from gunman [name]* - different perspective from those I had previously read.

Wasteless pantry opens in the Perth Hills - not convenient for self, but nice that it exists. Among other things, aiming to decrease/cease to use disposable packaging.

A flow chart against supposed 'religious zealots' reasons against gay marriage - I have complicated opinions on this one, especially the problematic 'interpreting other people's beliefs for them'. However, I'm going to want to find it again, if only to talk through aspects of it with the kids. There are some very good, well thought out, responses in the comments, better than the flow chart itself (yes, there are also blockheads in the comments as well). There are also people managing to disagree without resorting to ad hominem attacks and the like!

* name omitted after to-ing and fro-ing, on the principle that the names of murders should be lost to history.
