Black Panther Is Far More Than Just A Comic Book Movie - heavy on the spoilers, very interesting commentary on the film, including diversity and intersectionality.

Survival Tips for S.H.I.E.L.D. Recruits warning, this is a rabbit hole. #570 tips, but not updated in four years, so not an unlimited rabbit hole. I actually didn't make it down past #500, but I'm blaming the vague.

The Brain Literally Starts Eating Itself When It Doesn't Get Enough Sleep. Puts a whole new perspective of 'but you can sleep when you're dead'.

The Book That First Spoke My Feral Language: Richard Adams’ Watership Down. A love song to a book that broke boundaries on what stories got told. Not particularly spoilery, mostly commenting on things you would pick up in the first few chapters, I think.

The Mentally Ill Hero: How The Tick and Dirk Gently Give Unbalanced “Sidekicks” Center Stage. This one has lots of potentially spoilery comments. Season 2 of Dirk Gently is briefly discussed. An entire episode of The Tick is unpacked in detail looking at the way that it realistically reflects specific experiences of living with chronic mental illness.

Epithets: Fandom's Designated Hitters. This is one I go back and read occasionally, because I think it helps to remind me why it is that I find particular phrasings annoying in stories. This time, I'm probably actually going to bookmark it, rather than going 'oh, I should look for that'. Chances are, I'll still google it, and struggle to find it, but whatever.

An Open Letter With Respect to Reviews Published on Rocket Stack Rank. Commentary that addresses bigotry on one reviewing site, across a number of axes of oppression. Locus' twitter response is linked at the bottom.

The Potty Post: Gender-free restrooms at SF&F Conventions. All of this. Especially the issue that the gender-neutral toilets in many locations are also the accessible toilets, and there often aren't enough of them just for those who use mobility aids, let alone any other group of people who have need of accessibility.

Executive functioning tips for dealing with procrastination from reddit. I'm adding this to my teaching resources file.

WarGames: the only winning move is still not to play - reflection on the iconic movie by Jamie Kingston. I was particularly struck by the commentary on the contrast between the nuanced presentation of masculinity, and the hackneyed presentation of all the female characters.

Emmys allows non-binary start to choose category for their nomination - I disagree with the last statement though, that 'actor' is a non-gendered term. It is getting there, but when explicitly contrasted with 'actress' is isn't quite. But I think that the actor in question picking that is a really interesting choice, and good on them. [And I actively use actor for all people who act, and I do that for a lot of roles where there is an'-ess' variant, and I find the struggle with male-as-default annoying, along with the males terms are more 'credible'. But this is meant to be a links list, not a rant...]

Everything you want to now about the 5:2 diet - some what of a misleading title, because some of what I read as reportedly by 'experts' sounds like they haven't read any of the actual publications on this particular 'diet' (the 'and then people eat more afterwards' is actually covered in the scientific reports, as are some of the other criticisms, such as 'whatever you want doesn't just mean junk food'). But there are a lot of useful points in there.

(and I have many more tabs to close - I've managed 17 in the process of making this post, while opening another 6 (of which this one I'm typing in counts) so I'm going to go and do something else for a while)
