Having just walked back from the tearoom when hiccups started*, my tea was far too hot for the usual method of soothing them. Holding my breath made things worse. Closest thing at hand to put in my mouth? A tiny teddy bear biscuit** stuck on my tongue, and then held as still as possible - hiccups stopped instantly. This is one that I have no idea how I'm going to test it for repeatability, as by the time I get hiccups again, I'm sure I'll have run out of biscuits (or they will be stale)***. The post hiccup pain is still there, as is the message that the muscles are about to spasm again any moment, but cutting out at two or three hiccups? Priceless.

*** generalizing the test might be more useful. Any non-melting food object? Any sugar containing object? So many possible hypotheses when one has no theoretical basis and no motivation to go and find one....
