Summary

  • Adds a write-side memory instruction, ## Remembering (MemoryWriteSection), beside the existing read-side one: when the user asks the agent to remember, note, or keep something, it must write through save_preference (preferences) or memory_store (everything else) before confirming, and must never say "saved / noted / remembered" unless that write succeeded in the same turn.
  • The section is registered whenever a memory-writing tool is registered and visible after tool filtering — independent of learning.enabled, which the default install leaves off.
  • memory_store becomes callable from a one-line request: namespace is optional (defaults to the assistant's own scope, the one memory_recall reads), key is optional (derived deterministically from the content), and the description speaks the user's intent instead of the engine's namespaces.
  • The read-side and write-side gates move out of factory.rs (3 lines under its legacy cap) into builder/helpers.rs::add_memory_prompt_sections. No config, RPC, schema or module-contract change.

Problem

"Please remember that I will be having next scrum meeting on 10 september" was answered with "got it … saved" and zero tool calls. In the next chat the agent went looking in the calendar because memory held nothing. The write tools were offered (memory_store, save_preference were both visible), but nothing in the prompt said a request to remember must become a tool call, nothing forbade claiming a save without one, and memory_store required the model to invent a namespace and a key it had never seen. The archivist is not a safety net here: it writes the turn to the FTS5 episodic table, which no recall path reads, and files raw prose into the memory tree only at segment close. Full mechanism with file:line in #6048.

Solution

  • agent/learning/prompt_sections.rs: MemoryWriteSection / MEMORY_WRITE_INSTRUCTION (≤ 80 words, pinned by test), the tool lists MEMORY_READ_TOOLS / MEMORY_WRITE_TOOLS, and any_tool_offered — the registered-and-visible check both sections share (an empty visible set is the wildcard path, as before).
  • builder/helpers.rs::add_memory_prompt_sections: the read-side gate exactly as it was (learning.enabled and a retrieval tool offered), plus the write-side gate (a write tool offered, no learning condition). factory.rs calls it in place of the inline block.
  • memory/tools/store.rs: resolve_namespace (absent → DEFAULT_AGENT_MEMORY_NAMESPACE; present-but-non-string → error; explicit empty still refused by the tool), resolve_key (absent → derive_key; non-string → error), derive_key (first six words as a snake_case stem, capped, plus a 24-bit FNV-1a suffix of the whole text, so re-saving the same sentence overwrites and two notes that open alike stay apart). Existing callers that pass both arguments are unchanged.
  • Tradeoff: this is a prompt contract plus tool ergonomics, not enforcement — the harness does not yet verify that a reply claiming "saved" had a write call in the same turn (listed as a follow-up in Agent replies "saved" to "please remember …" without any memory write, so the next chat has nothing to recall #6048), and a fact written this way reaches the automatic recall lane only once the conversation segment is filed into the tree.

Submission Checklist

If a section does not apply to this change, mark the item as N/A with a one-line reason. Do not delete items.

  • Tests added or updated (happy path + at least one failure / edge case) per Testing Strategy — section renders and stays under the word ceiling; gate: registered+visible, registered-but-filtered, visible-but-unregistered, delegation-side tool, read/write lists disjoint; end-to-end session build with learning off carries the rule, a profile that hides the write tools does not; memory_store argument resolution: default namespace, trimmed explicit, empty left for refusal, non-string rejected, derived key deterministic / content-sensitive / capped / no-word fallback.
  • Diff coverage ≥ 80% — changed lines (Vitest + cargo-llvm-cov merged via diff-cover) meet the gate enforced by .github/workflows/ci-lite.yml. Run pnpm test:coverage and pnpm test:rust locally; PRs below 80% on changed lines will not merge. — 95 % locally (cargo llvm-cov --lib over the touched domains + diff-cover vs upstream/main: 87 changed lines, 4 missing — the pre-existing "skipping MemoryAccessSection" log branch).
  • Coverage matrix updated — added/removed/renamed feature rows in docs/TEST-COVERAGE-MATRIX.md reflect this change (or N/A: behaviour-only change) — row 8.4.10.
  • All affected feature IDs from the matrix are listed in the PR description under ## Related
  • No new external network dependencies introduced (mock backend used per Testing Strategy)
  • Manual smoke checklist updated if this touches release-cut surfaces (docs/RELEASE-MANUAL-SMOKE.md) — N/A: no release-cut surface.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Memory-saving guidance now appears when memory-writing tools are available.
    • Requests to remember information are handled as explicit memory writes before responding.
    • Memory entries can be saved with only content; namespace and key values are filled automatically.
    • Memory keys are generated consistently from saved content with stronger collision resistance.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Memory guidance now reflects exactly which memory tools are available.
    • Improved retrieval guidance helps prevent unsupported claims about stored information.

"Please remember that I will be having next scrum meeting on 10 september"
was answered with "got it, saved" and zero tool calls; the next chat had
nothing to recall and went looking in the calendar.

The write tools were offered, but nothing in the prompt said a request to
remember must become a tool call, or forbade claiming a save without one,
and `memory_store` made the model invent a namespace and a key first.

- `MemoryWriteSection` (`## Remembering`): write before confirming —
`save_preference` for preferences, `memory_store` for everything else —
and never say saved/noted/remembered unless the write succeeded this turn.
Registered whenever a write tool is registered and visible, independent
  of `learning.enabled`.
- Both memory section gates move out of `factory.rs` (at its legacy cap)
  into `helpers::add_memory_prompt_sections`; `any_tool_offered` is the
  shared registered-and-visible check.
- `memory_store`: `namespace` defaults to the assistant's own scope, `key`
is derived from the content (stem + FNV-1a suffix), wrong-typed values
are rejected, and the description speaks the user's intent.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The change adds visibility-gated memory write instructions, centralizes memory prompt registration, and lets memory_store derive optional namespace and key values. Tests cover prompt output, tool visibility, argument resolution, and derived-key storage.

Write prompt contract
src/openhuman/agent/learning/prompt_sections.rs, src/openhuman/agent/learning/mod.rs, src/openhuman/agent/learning/prompt_sections_tests_2_tests.rs
MemoryWriteSection names only available write tools. The prompt requires a successful write before claiming that information was saved. Tool availability includes registered, visible, and delegation tools.

The session builder registers read and write memory sections independently of learning.enabled. Tests cover unrestricted, filtered, and scoped tool sets. Documentation records the behavior and coverage.
memory_store argument defaults
src/openhuman/memory/tools/store.rs, src/openhuman/memory/tools/store_tests.rs
namespace defaults to DEFAULT_AGENT_MEMORY_NAMESPACE. Missing key values use a deterministic snake-case stem with a 16-character SHA-256 suffix. Only content remains required.

Memory writes gain defaults and visibility-gated instructions, but the recorded concern about namespace-default documentation remains open and should be reconciled before relying on the documentation.

…ived key

Two review findings, each raised independently by CodeRabbit and Codex.

The write instruction named `save_preference` and `memory_store` whichever
one the session actually offered, so a named-scope agent carrying just one
was told to call the other — the failure the visibility gate exists to
prevent. `archivist`, `trigger_reactor` and `workflow_builder` all offer
`memory_store` without `save_preference`, so this was live, not theoretical.
`MemoryWriteSection` now takes which tools are offered and renders only
those routes; `add_memory_prompt_sections` asks per tool.

The derived key kept 24 bits of hash. The stem collides by design (notes
that open with the same six words), so the suffix carries the whole burden
of telling two facts apart, and a collision overwrites an unrelated memory
rather than duplicating it — roughly even odds by ~4,800 templated notes.
Now SHA-256 truncated to 16 hex (64 bits), the same digest idiom as
`config::workspace_handle`.

Tests: instruction variants name only the offered tool and stay under the
word ceiling; the empty-guard renders nothing; a real `archivist` session's
"Remembering" block names `memory_store` and never `save_preference`; the
digest suffix separates two notes that share a stem.

tinyhumansai#6045 (Lane C auto-recall) merged first and touched the same section-gating
block, as its PR body warned:

- factory.rs keeps the `helpers::add_memory_prompt_sections` call; tinyhumansai#6045's
ungating of the read side moves inside that helper, so `MemoryAccessSection`
no longer consults `learning.enabled` and keeps main's `[memory_access]` log
prefix. `config` is then unused and leaves the signature.
- helpers.rs carries both additions: tinyhumansai#6045's `bind_session_memory` and this
  branch's `add_memory_prompt_sections`.
- The tinyhumansai#6048 builder tests move to `builder_tests_part_03_tests.rs`; tinyhumansai#6045 added
a test to part_01, which put it at 759 lines against the 750-line gate.
- Coverage matrix keeps rows 8.4.7-8.4.9 (tinyhumansai#6040) and 8.4.10 (tinyhumansai#6048), the latter
  re-pointed at part_03.

The note still described the FNV suffix the review round replaced, and left
the namespace default ambiguous between the constant and its value. Also
records why the write instruction is per-tool: archivist, trigger_reactor
and workflow_builder carry memory_store without save_preference.

On the .claude/memory.md note (outside-diff comment): the namespace half is already correct, but re-reading the sentence found a real error next to it, so thanks — both are addressed in f3846420b.

Namespace — no change needed. DEFAULT_AGENT_MEMORY_NAMESPACE is "global" (agent/tinyagents/host/agent_memory.rs:102), and its own doc comment says that is "the same namespace the rest of OpenHuman's recall already reads". So "the assistant's own memory" in the tool description and global in the note describe the same scope — the note simply named the constant and its current value. I have reworded it to say both explicitly so the two readings cannot drift apart.

What was actually wrong. The same sentence still said the key carries an FNV suffix. That was true when the note was written and stopped being true in cda5c95a3, when your collision finding moved it to a 16-hex SHA-256 suffix. Corrected, with the reason recorded (the stem collides by design, so a key collision overwrites an unrelated memory rather than duplicating it).

The note now also records why the write instruction is per-tool — archivist, trigger_reactor and workflow_builder carry memory_store without save_preference — so the next person to touch that gate has the live cases in front of them.

memory::sync_pipeline_e2e_tests::single_batch_sync_to_tree failed once on
f384642 with "at least one job should complete"; the file is untouched by
this branch, the same lane passed on main minutes earlier (run 34110624736),
and the test passes 3/3 locally against the re-pinned tinymemory v1.15.0.
