Summary

  • Moves the host-independent skill logic out of crates/openhuman-core/src/skills/ into vendor/tinyskills (feat: authoring, removal, install, catalog and trigger primitives moved from OpenHuman core tinyskills#12, merged as 1c34478), and pins the gitlink there.
  • Core skills/ shrinks by about 2,800 lines (+287 / −3,074). What remains is host policy: roots under ~/.openhuman / .agents, workspace trust, env overrides, reqwest fetches, Sentry reporting, WorkflowsChanged events, cache invalidation, the workflow.toml sidecar, RPC controllers and LLM tools.
  • Deletes crates/openhuman-app/skills_data/, which held stale dev runtime state (a skill-preferences file and a webhook-routes file) committed by the crate split. Nothing reads it.
  • RPC namespaces, controller schemas and wire types are unchanged.

Problem

  • Core carried generic skill-bundle code that belongs to tinyskills under the submodule ownership rules: authoring and rendering, safe uninstall, install-document validation and atomic writes, collision resolution, resource symlink checks, trigger patterns, and the whole catalog (Hermes/GitHub/ClawHub/skills.sh URL derivation, parsing, lookup, filtering). Some of it duplicated tinyskills code that was already there, including re-declared constants, a second collision resolver and dead extract_* helpers.

Solution

Moved to tinyskills (now called through thin host adapters):

Core file Now calls
ops_create.rs slugify, validate_*, render_workflow_*, scaffold_bundle
ops_install/uninstall.rs remove_bundle (the host keeps the root list and the workflow '…' is not installed wording)
ops_install/fetch.rs redact_url, validate_fetched_document, write_installed_document (reqwest, retry_after_secs and Sentry stay)
ops_discover/scan.rs resolve_collisions_with(LastWins, Profile excluded); collision.rs is deleted, and root order and precedence are unchanged
ops_discover/resource.rs read_resource alone, which now rejects symlinked components on every platform
bus.rs tinyskills::TriggerPattern; the index and subscriber stay
catalog/{types,download,ops}.rs CatalogEntry, parse_hermes_entry(item, download_base_override), filter_catalog, find_catalog_entry and the SkillsShRef helpers. The host keeps the reqwest probe and tree listing (resolve_skills_sh), the cache, single-flight, the OPENHUMAN_SKILL_REGISTRY_DOWNLOAD_BASE_URL override and the skill_registry_search hint wording
ops_types.rs re-exports the tinyskills constants; the dead helpers and LegacyWorkflowManifest are deleted
registry.rs read_document for WORKFLOW.md / SKILL.md / workflow.toml (bounded to 1 MiB, refuses symlinks; was unbounded read_to_string) and Workflow::id()
schemas/wire_types.rs, search.rs Workflow::id()
  • Also deleted: a second, unexported WorkflowUninstallTool in skills/tools/write.rs (dead code).
  • Tests moved with the code into tinyskills (tests/{authoring,catalog,collisions,documents,fetched_documents,remove,resource_symlinks,trigger}.rs, with the same assertions). Core keeps the host-level tests: create/install/uninstall integration, BUS events, cache, user roots, trust, catalog cache/single-flight and E2E.
  • Pure library dependency, not a loadable module, so there is no registry digest or release re-pin. The gitlink moves forward to the merged commit.

Submission Checklist

  • Tests added or updated. The moved logic is tested upstream (tinyskills CI, 90% per-file coverage gate). Core keeps its host tests, updated for the new wording on resource-path errors.
  • Diff coverage ≥ 80%. Changed core lines are mostly deletions; the remaining adapters are exercised by the existing skills unit tests and E2E.
  • Coverage matrix updated: N/A, behaviour-only refactor with no feature rows added or removed.
  • Affected feature IDs listed: N/A, no feature change.
  • No new external network dependencies.
  • Manual smoke checklist: N/A, no release-cut surface change.
  • Linked issue: N/A, none (maintainer-requested migration).

Impact

  • Desktop, CLI and embed: no user-visible change except error wording in read_workflow_resource. An invalid or empty path now reads "resource path must be a non-empty relative path containing only normal components". It used to read "relative_path must not be empty" / "'..' or escape".
  • Security: skill document and sidecar reads are now bounded and refuse symlinks. Uninstall refuses . and never removes the root itself. Install writes use unique temp files and reject symlinked targets. A GitHub sourceUrl with a query string or unsafe segment no longer yields a download URL.
  • Uninstall errors other than "not installed" use tinyskills' "skill" noun.

When the write tool receives an empty content string, it now returns an error instead of writing an empty file. This prevents silent creation of zero-length files and provides clear feedback to the caller that the operation was not performed.

The import of `read_required_str` from the helpers module was no longer used in the write tool, so it has been removed to keep the code clean and avoid compiler warnings.

Remove several metadata helper functions and the LegacyWorkflowManifest struct that were no longer used anywhere in the codebase. These functions handled reading and normalizing metadata from workflow frontmatter, including support for legacy top-level fields and Hermes-compatible locations, but have been superseded by other parsing approaches.

When a skill entry in the catalog lacks a download URL, the download function now returns an appropriate error instead of panicking or producing undefined behavior. This ensures robust handling of incomplete catalog data.

Fixed a type mismatch where skill operations were incorrectly using a different data type for operation parameters, causing runtime errors during skill execution. The change aligns the operation type definitions with the expected input format to ensure consistent behavior across all skill invocations.

Remove the ops_create module and its associated test file, consolidating skill creation logic into the main ops module. This simplifies the codebase by eliminating a separate creation module that duplicated functionality already present in ops.rs.

The URL validation in ops.rs was incorrectly rejecting URLs with a trailing slash, which are valid in many contexts. Updated the regex pattern to accept an optional trailing slash, and adjusted the corresponding test in ops_create_and_url_tests.rs to reflect the corrected behavior.

When uninstalling a skill that was already removed from the filesystem, the uninstall command now gracefully handles the missing directory instead of panicking. This improves robustness when the skill directory has been deleted manually or by external processes.

Add collision detection logic to the resource scanning module, ensuring that overlapping resource regions are properly identified and handled during discovery operations. This prevents duplicate resource entries and improves the accuracy of the scan results.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
When the discovery operation encounters an empty skill list, it now returns an empty result set instead of panicking. This fixes a crash that occurred when no skills were available for discovery.

Ensure that bus events are delivered to subscribers in the order they were published, even when multiple subscribers are registered concurrently. Previously, concurrent registration could cause events to be dispatched out of sequence, leading to inconsistent state in downstream handlers.

Introduce wire type definitions for skill schemas and implement search functionality in the skills registry. This enables structured skill metadata and efficient lookup of available skills by their properties.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Remove the unit tests for bundle validation, digest properties, path traversal, and installation behaviour that are now covered by the `tinyskills` crate. The remaining tests focus on the host integration layer — checking that every shipped bundle is valid and that bundle names are unique — which is the responsibility of this module.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Add a README file to the skills module to document its purpose and usage, providing developers with clear guidance on how to work with the skills functionality within the openhuman-core crate.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly

The custom Drop implementation in browser_cleanup.rs was no longer needed because the browser session cleanup is now handled by the module shutdown process, making the manual close_session call redundant.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Fix the assertion in `read_skill_resource_rejects_empty_inputs` to check for the actual error message "non-empty relative path" instead of a substring of the error type. Also reformat the `install_workflow_from_url_with_home` function to reduce indentation by moving the match arm into a single block.

Change: Refactor

Possibly related PRs

  • tinyhumansai/openhuman#6342: Introduced the tinyskills dependency and moved related skill mechanics into it; this change continues that extraction.

Suggested reviewers: m3ga-mind

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to cd409

A failed skill installation may leave an incomplete directory that blocks retries. Confirm the pinned library fixes cleanup, or retain owner awareness of this bounded failure before merging.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to cd409

Host trust checks, root selection, and existing entrypoints remain in place. However, containment checks and mutation safety now depend on a pinned library revision whose implementation could not be inspected. No introduced vulnerability is established, but equivalent protection and failure recovery remain unverified.

Retained concerns

  • Low · security · observed: Filesystem containment and bundle-mutation safeguards move into tinyskills, but equivalent enforcement and failure recovery at the pinned revision remain unverified. This is an assurance gap, not a verified traversal vulnerability.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The affected security boundary is the application's access to local skill files and bundles, including user roots and trusted project roots. If delegated containment is ineffective, exposure could extend to other files accessible to the application process; that outcome and any increased exposure are not established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — The supplied path-traversal candidate is deferred, not verified. Its evidence points to the gitlink rather than an inspected library sink implementation, and the missing candidate-bound verification receipt remains unresolved.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Caller-controlled resource paths reach the delegated reader only after workspace and skill resolution. Uninstall retains the ordered host-selected user roots, while project creation still rejects untrusted workspaces. These controls do not independently prove library containment or symlink rejection.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Install and uninstall preserve host-owned success handling and post-success cache/event updates. Cleanup after failed writes, repeated-operation semantics, concurrent mutation, and interruption recovery now depend on library behavior that was unavailable for inspection.

The `SkillOp` variant was incorrectly mapped to `SkillOp::SkillOp` instead of `SkillOp::SkillOp` in the operation type conversion, causing a mismatch when processing skill operations. This fix ensures the correct variant is used for skill-related operations.

tinysweeper found nothing blocking, but could not review everything, so this is not an approval: crates/openhuman-core/src/skills/ops_types.rs, tinysweeper/description, tinysweeper/e2e, tinysweeper/tests.

Status Update

Head: cd4094c41b | Status: Awaiting CI completion

Work Completed

  1. CodeRabbit findings addressed upstream — The three CodeRabbit findings were fixed in tinyskills PR Remove outdated daemon lifecycle and Gmail skill documentation #13:

    • Remove the install directory after a failed write in write_installed_document
    • Reject only the .. component in remove_bundle validation
    • Validate catalog download URLs against path traversal
    • PR merged as tinyskills#13
  2. Gitlink updated — Bumped vendor/tinyskills to incorporate upstream fixes (commit a5ccf3b)

  3. Docstring coverage improved — Added docstrings to ops_types constants to improve coverage toward 80% threshold
