Isbjorn & Ibsen, March 2017
me - with garibaldi

Isbjorn & Ibsen on the Beddinge in my office ("Beddinge" is the name of the type of Ikea couch/bed it is).

Couch has a red velvet cover (and red velvet pillows) and we also have red fleece blankets we put on it and the whole thing gets so furry you have no idea. Kevin just washed the blankets last week and the fuzz is already mighty.

The spot Isbjorn & Ibsen are snuggling on is where there's a heated cat pad under the fleece blanket. Toasty spot is toasty.

Sometimes they cuddle together in such a way it looks like we have one ridiculously large strange mutant Norwegian Forest Cat but here you can pretty much tell Isbjorn is sorta spooning Ibsen.

Baseball and Minicon
me - with garibaldi

Baseball season will have started this year by the time Minicon rolls around.

The Twins are on the road the week prior to Minicon which means non-game day tours of Target Field are available the Wednesday and Thursday (and other days) prior to Minicon. Details on Target Field Tours. It's really a nifty ballpark and a cool place to tour if you're at all into baseball or have an interest in very green buildings and/or clever architecture.

The Twins play the Chicago White Sox at Target Field in Minneapolis the weekend of Minicon (7:10pm on Friday, 1:10pm on Saturday, 3:10pm on Sunday) and Cleveland the Monday through Thursday following Minicon (7:10pm games M-W, day game that Thursday). [Twins Schedule]

I note this in case anyone coming in from out of town wants to take in a game or stay a little longer to take in a game. As always when it comes to Twins games at Target Field we often have tickets available (really good tickets, in fact) or can easily help someone find or select good tickets.

We'll be skipping games Minicon weekend even though there's a nifty giveaway on Saturday, but may very well have tickets for the series immediately after Minicon. I probably could be persuaded to go to the Sunday afternoon game if folks I know from out of town were going and wanted me to join them.

How To Follow Me (& Others) on Dreamwidth
me - with garibaldi
laurel
Yeah, I know this is a PITA for those folks who are sticking with Livejournal and/or don't want to create a new account. Here's my attempt to explain the options you have.

See Public Dreamwidth Posts on Your LJ Friends Page

I've created a LJ Feed for my public Dreamwidth posts:

laurel_on_dw

Note: you will only see public posts this way. As with other LJ RSS Feeds, you can comment on them but it's unlikely the originator of the feed will see your comments (unless they specifically go look at the LJ version of their feed which I doubt anyone ever does). Also LJ feed accounts will only show you public posts from the last two weeks or so.

If you have a paid LJ account, you can add the feeds of other folks on Dreamwidth this way (or check if someone else has already created a LJ feed for them) by visiting http://www.livejournal.com/syn/ and adding the URL of the feed (place to do that is near the bottom of the page). If the feed already exists on LJ, you'll be shown the existing LJ feed account and can subscribe to it as you would any other LJ account.

The URL for feeds for Dreamwidth accounts are (replace "laurel" with the name of the Dreamwidth account you want to add):
http://laurel.dreamwidth.org/data/rss
or
http://laurel.dreamwidth.org/data/atom

If You Already Have a Dreamwidth Account

Just visit my Dreamwidth profile page or journal and subscribe to me! If you actually post to a Dreamwidth journal yourself, you can also set up whether you allow me to see protected entries & all that jazz.

If You Don't Yet Have a Dreamwidth Account But Are Willing to Visit Dreamwidth To Read the Journals Of Folks You Know There (& Comment On Them There)

If you've ever commented on one of my Livejournal posts, you actually probably already have a Dreamwidth account, it's just a Livejournal Open ID account (a.k.a. Identity Account) and you need to claim/access it in order to see my protected entries and do other things on Dreamwidth.

Read this for explanation/details:
Dreamwidth FAQ: If you're coming from LiveJournal to Dreamwidth: OpenID and identity accounts

Simple-ish steps:
1. Go to http://www.dreamwidth.org/openid/

2. Where it says "Your OpenID URL:" enter YourLivejournalUsername.livejournal.com & click "Login" (For me, the URL I enter for OpenID URL is "laurel.livejournal.com") (If you're already logged in to Livejournal you probably won't have to do anything else; if you aren't, you may need to log in to your LJ.)

3. Go to http://www.dreamwidth.org/changeemail.bml and enter whatever email address you want connected to the account in "new email address" and then select the button "Change email address"

4. Check your email (for that address) and read the email from Dreamwidth (likely webmaster@dreamwidth.org) and click on the appropriate link to confirm things.

5. Visit the Dreamwidth profile page(s) for folks you want to subscribe to (here's mine) and then select "Subscribe" and you may also need to select something after that as well. One easy way to find people to subscribe to? See if they've already granted you access to their Dreamwidth account by going to your profile page (click the little OpenID icon to left of your LJ URL where it's listed near the top of the page). On your profile page under "People" there should also be "Has Access From" and you'll probably see at least a few folks listed there. (These are people who imported their Livejournals into Dreamwidth and included friends/filter groups & comments and such. So if they gave you access on LJ, you probably also are listed here. Not everyone imports comments and filters when moving onto Dreamwidth, but many do.)

6. Select "Reading Page" (usually listed up top by your LJ URL) or something like that and you should see the Dreamwidth equivalent of a Friends Page. You'll probably want to bookmark that because one downside of the OpenID Dreamwidth accounts is your account ID is a combination of letters & numbers and not something pretty and easy to remember.

If you ever decide to create a full-on regular Dreamwidth account you might be tempted to delete/remove your existing identity/LJ OpenID account, but there's absolutely no harm in leaving it there. You might also want to claim it and connect it to your new Dreamwidth account (you might not want to connect all those you.livejournal.com comments to your shiny new Dreamwidth account, I can imagine scenarios where you wouldn't).

+ + +

If Someone You Follow Only Accepts Comments On Their Posts on Dreamwidth (they might be crossposting to LJ, but only accepting comments on Dreamwidth)

You probably should make/claim a Dreamwidth Identity account (using your Livejournal Open ID) as mentioned above. Or a full-on Dreamwidth account. Whichever you prefer.

If You Prefer Getting Dreamwidth Journal Updates Via Email

I didn't even think of this until I saw someone else post about it, but of course it's doable. Maybe you're cool with visiting your Livejournal Friends Page regularly but don't want to bother also checking a Dreamwidth Reading Page (perhaps because only a couple of people you follow are exclusively on Dreamwidth). Maybe you just prefer getting email updates.

With a Dreamwidth account (full one or an Identity account based on your Livejournal OpenID as explained above), you can visit the profile page for a user, select "track user" and then "also notify via email" and you'll get emails when they update their journal.

I believe there's a limit on how many of these you can set up, but it is an option.

As ever, the "A guide to Dreamwidth for LiveJournal users" part of the Dreamwidth FAQ is useful. See also my previous post about this stuff.

+ + +

If you find yourself wanting to link to someone on Dreamwidth from your LJ as you would with "lj-user" code etc (a la laurel), you can find HTML to emulate that on each Dreamwidth user's profile page (near the very bottom of it). That's where I found the HTML for: [personal profile] laurel

One of my fave things on Dreamwidth is how easy it is to do that for not just Dreamwidth but also LJ and plenty of other sites. I'm still having difficulty remembering how as I'm so used to the LJ way. D'oh!

TV and movie recs?
me - with garibaldi
laurel
What TV shows and/or movies have you enjoyed lately? (New, old, whatever.)

I know in the past people have hesitated to rec such things to me as I tend to be familiar with All The Things (especially TV things) but I'm really more out of the loop than I've ever been (plus it's not as if I don't enjoy hearing about things I've heard of. You could rec Person of Interest to me and I'd be happy to hear it).

I need to post some new recs of my own, I can't just gush about Person of Interest for the rest of my life (well, I could . . . ).

moving to Dreamwidth for real this time
me - with garibaldi
laurel
This post is mostly aimed at the folks still on Livejournal but I imagine some of the info might be useful to folks on Dreamwidth too.

I've had a Dreamwidth account since the very beginning but somehow missed out on the seed/permanent/lifetime/whatever accounts each time they were offered which is a bummer. (One thing that kept me at Livejournal was my permanent/lifetime account there.)

If you aren't familiar with Dreamwidth, I'd say the super short description I'd give is that it's a spiffier version of Livejournal; while originally based on the LJ code, lots of nifty things have been added. Many have written about Dreamwidth's origins and inspiration over the years, you can find some links to that stuff on the Dreamwidth wiki.

I always meant to do more on Dreamwidth & then crosspost the things to LJ, but I got lazy & didn't mess with things much.

Given the relocation of LJ servers to Russia & all that, I decided to really make the move instead of half-heartedly poking at DW from time to time. Still figuring out whether I'll delete all the things on LJ or leave some or what (for quite a few years I was regularly deleting stuff, I should probably track down those archives if I can & keep all the things together).

Gonna keep the Livejournal account even if just to read things there sometimes, but I probably won't be cross-posting things beyond this post.

Much tweaking and organizing to do. Maybe if I get my ducks in a row I'll start posting and reading things regularly again-- wouldn't that be something?

The latest Metafilter post re Livejournal might be a good place to start if you're wondering what I'm on about regarding the server move, etc.

A Guide to Dreamwidth for Livejournal Users is a very handy thing.

If you're not sure you're ready to move fully to Dreamwidth, you can still read what your friends are saying over there (even if they don't crosspost to Livejournal) by logging into Dreamwidth using your Livejournal Open ID. Here's details on how that works including what OpenID accounts can do (read, comment) versus what they can't do (post entries).

Here's a link to the "If you're coming from LiveJournal to Dreamwidth: Importing" part of the Dreamwidth FAQ for details on how to import one's LJ into DW. It's dead easy, I've done it multiple times. Big issue for me is deciding if I want to include all the things or not.

If you have concerns about Dreamwidth's security & privacy policies, this news posting from January 1, 2017 delves into that a bit.

Here are details on what you get with the free & paid accounts on Dreamwidth.

The Dreamwidth Shop wherein you can purchase paid accounts for yourself or others. Or points that can be used to buy paid account or extra icons or whatever.

(If any kind & generous soul has the $ or points & wants to purchase a Paid or Premium account for "laurel" on Dreamwidth or send me points there to use to purchase said upgrade(s), that would rock & would also mean I could import all my icons from LJ which is obviously super important. ;-p I have another Dreamwidth account too which could stand an upgrade for that matter; wish they offered a family deal, but I'm also glad to throw $ at folks providing a service I like & use, we just can't afford to do so right now.
