Professor Flitwick stood calmly behind his desk, on the tall stack of books he needed to see over the top of it, as the fifth year students filed into the room. They seemed to be a quiet bunch this year and, unlike some of the other students, he never had any real trouble with them.
He cleared his throat as they began to settle and they all turned their attention to him.
"Good morning class! Today we will be starting Summoning Charms, which will surely come up on your OWLS. Summoning Charms are a tricky bit of magic, but can come in incredibly handy! I once knew a young man who held of a rampaging Manticore with only a well placed summoning charm and a large boulder!" He clapped his hands together. "Now, you may have noticed that I have not paired you off into partner groups, as have many of your other professors. And indeed I am not going to. I find you all work much better when you are sitting with students of your own choosing. But be warned! If there is too much socializing I will be forced to seperate you!"
"Very good! Now, on the to charm! To sucessfully summon something you must know the general area of the object. And the farther away something is the more difficult it will be to summon it! The incantation you will use is Accio! You must also name the object you wish to summon! This is a very important point! If you are vague as to what you wish to summon you may find yourself with a lap full of very angry hornets. And yes, I do speak from experience! The wand movement is a sharp jab in the direction of the object you wish to summon!" Flickwick smiled and pointed at a pile of cushions next to his desk. "Today you will be summoning cushions! So, I want you all to practice the incantation once before using your wand, and then you may get started! I shall be walking around the room correcting your technique! You may begin!"
Flitwick hopped down off his chair and began his rounds, fully expecting to be flown off his feet at any minute.
