Couch Thursday: Snowflake Challenge #14
Jan. 30th, 2020 09:32 amI'm been working my way through the Snowflake Challenge and I've gotten up to: Share your love for a trope, cliché, kink, motif, or theme
I thought this was a great topic. Thinking it over I realized I had different favorite tropes depending on the fandom and pairings.
With The Sentinel (Jim/Blair) I love case fic.
With Stargate Atlantis (John/Rodney) I lean towards AU's.
With Sherlock (Mycroft/Lestrade) It's domestic and hurt/comfort.
Overall, I have a love of happy-ending apocalyptic fic. It's the whole striving to survive and succeeding against impossible odds thing.
Got a favorite trope? Is it one that spans across all fandoms and pairings or do you divvy them up?

Jan. 23rd, 2020 10:23 amCommit an Act of Kindness (or two or three ♥). Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post about your experience if you feel comfortable doing so.
Allow me to be kind and give everyone an easy way way to fill this prompt.
Just drop a story prompt over here at this post. See how easy that was?
I suppose, if you insist on a excess of kindness I could go a step further. How else was I kind today...
...
....
.....
I'm thinking....
Oh! I passed out drugs this morning.
One of the staff had a pounding headache and asked if I had anything to help. I gave her the last of my alka-selzer for colds med. No idea if it helped. If not, I may not have been kind at all.

Jan. 19th, 2020 01:41 pmTalk about a creator/someone who inspired you
I'm going back to the beginning and naming Gene Rodenberry. Star Trek the original series showed me what stories could be.
Gene wrote characters that I wanted to spend time with and gave me a place I wanted to live.
It was fandom that blessed me the knowledge that I wasn't alone in all of those things.
Yeah, I'm pretty damn grateful to all of you.

Jan. 18th, 2020 02:27 pmPromote at least one canon that you adore (old, new, forever fandom)
My forever fandom is Stargate Atlantis.
Since all my recs in the previous challenge were SGA I'm going to consider this done.
It includes story, art, and meta. Heavy on the John and Rodney.

Jan. 18th, 2020 02:15 pmRec at least three fanworks that you didn’t create
Egg by Jane St Clair.
I’ve recced this before. I’ll rec it again. It’s 297 words to set your imagination on fire.
Randommindtime’s art for the SGA reverse bang - Area 51.
I grinned the entire time wrote the accompanying story.
John Sheppard and Rodney McKay picspam over at AO3 by bitter_crimson (Krim).
You’ll need to be signed into AO3 to see it. I just plain admire the dedication it took to put this together.
And another piece of John/Rodney art. This one by em-kellesvig (mischief5) Into the Lightening BECAUSE IT IS AWESOME
somewhere in the back of a dresser drawer, John Sheppard has an old maroon beret meta by Marythefan.
This is my favorite piece of John Sheppard meta, ever.

Jan. 14th, 2020 02:08 pmPromote/Rec sing the praises of yourself
I always find these sort of challenges the most difficult but I shall carry on.
I'm patient.
I have a very even temperament (shut up,
em_kellesvig, they don't need to know everything).
I have a keen sense of the ridiculous.
As proof, allow me to link to a few of the stories that I had the most fun writing.
Wash n' Wear series
Oh dear, did I mention it was crack?

If someone wanted to leave a prompt or two over at
romanncingmcshep -over here- that would be muchly appreciated.
Aside from that, I'd love artwork to go with any of my stories or left as a prompt.

Jan. 9th, 2020 09:26 pmIn your own space, Comment to someone you haven't ever interacted with before or introduce yourself to someone you've briefly interacted with and friend/follow them.
Yep, done this. Did this yesterday and today and... if I take into account the number of times I've left a comment to a story on A03, I've done this a lot. *g*
Anyone feeling a little shy about doing this is more than welcome to leave a comment here. *waves*

Jan. 7th, 2020 08:36 amSet some goals for the coming year
Goals:
Short term: Finish the three stories in my wip folder.
Long term: Write more. Or at least write more consistently more often. I have hopes that signing up for
inkingitout will help with that.
Get some consistency back with my health goals. I suspect I shouldn't be celebrating the piece of cake I didn't eat by having a glass of wine.

Jan. 5th, 2020 01:04 pmPimp Your Favorite Communities, Fests or Challenges!
With no shame whatsoever I'm going to pimp
story_works because it's a relaxed no pressure challenge community. The mods (of which I am one) try hard and balance a 'plan' with 'winging it' more often than not.
You do have to request to join, but that's mainly to keep bots at bay.
whatif_au is a great little challenge community that focuses on AUs. AUs=LOVE, baby.
I'd be remiss if I left out the Snowflake Challenge. It's been lovely to meet new people through the challenge.
And, finally, with no shame at all,
romancingmcshep.
Back in the SGA heyday, it was easy to find all kinds of McShep challenges. Most have drifted away in the passing years. But for those of us that still want John and Rodney to have their happy ending... well, this is your chance. :)
Just click on the pic for more info.

Jan. 3rd, 2020 04:49 pm Talk about your fannish history
I came into fandom late. For a few years I lurked. I found my way over to Livejournal (and since then Dreamwidth)
If I was fannish about anything prior to discovering fanfic you could say it was Star Trek:TOS.
(Ironically, these days I'm just starting to get on the ST:Reboot bandwagon)
It's wasn't until 2005 and Stargate Atlantis that I good and truly fell into fandom. I read the fanfic, followed the authors and artists. I read the meta and in the privacy of my own home said, "Yes, this!"
So I eased out of lurkdom far, far later in life than most, and created a LiveJournal account. My purpose at the time was simply to leave feedback. And then--
McShep ate my brain. I own the series on DVD and Blu-ray. I bought the action figures. I reached out to other fans and we met (and still do) in person. I tried my hand at art, but I never dreamed of touching a keyboard to write.
Then one day the McShep fanfic began to dry up. What!? How can that be? Damn it, all to hell. This cannot be allowed to happen. I know, I'll write something!
So, I wrote and I began creating and sharing hosting duties with online communities. The friendships and my love for Stargate Atlantis are as true today as they were way back in 2005.
I do dabble in other fandoms as a reader, but I've never been tempted to write in them.

Jan. 1st, 2020 08:44 amAn Introduction to Me
Good gracious--I don't suppose staring at my keyboard, getting up and pouring another cup of coffee and going back to staring at my keyboard is the most auspicious place to start. And yet? Scarily accurate.
The big fannish things:
I make no bones about it. I love fandom. It's like this big balloon of love that just keeps getting bigger.(That's your first hint that I'm a big dork at heart.) I was watching from the sidelines and cheering on when Ao3 was born.
And where else can so many from such a variety of cultures and life experiences come together for at least a little while to share their joy and passion with other people that understand completely what that feels like?
I'm an Aries. Idealism is a thing.
I read muchly in fandom, mostly The Sentinel, Buffy (Spuffy and Spander). Various others but those were the big two for me at the time.* That was about it. I was busy raising my family and reading fanfic was my reward at the end of a long day. Seriously, I used to print out the stories and read them in bed at night.
Then Stargate Atlantis happened. I fell head over heels for McShep. For the first time, I'm actually active in fandom. Creating first an LJ then DW account. Running fests –and omg—writing.
(and instigating Blow Job Friday)
I do read in other fandoms. Things will catch my fancy. Star Trek Reboot, Venom, Sherlock (Mycroft/Lestrade) and I'll revisit older stories I have loved. Does anyone remember PC/Mac from the commercials?
The RL things.
For as old as I am, I came into fandom late. I've raised four college graduates (With plenty of hair swept under the rug to prove it). I have grandkids. I have…I have…I have to somehow balance the grandmother act with writing slashy porn. Some times it makes my brain hurt.
Oh, look! You made it this far. Thank you, and here's a timely treat for being so patient with me. Four New Year's Resolutions John Breaks, And One He Doesn't ras_elased.
*a little clarification. I've mentally separated Buffy/Spike from Spike/Xander even though they are the same fandom. Spike/Xander was my first forey into slash and it had quite an impact on me.
