Wonderful news!
Gail Lyon has been declared one of the "Outstanding Principals in Canada".Only a total of 33 individuals chosen from across the country. Quite an accomplishment and recognition that is most deserved.

| Merivale's own YouTube |
[07 Feb 2007|10:17pm] |
So last year as part of the JS merger, Merivale got a new teacher with a speciality in multimedia named Mr. Hughes. The Vanguard and the website and to a lesser extent the yearbook are likely to never be the same again.
Anyway, since he's been on staff, Mr. Hughes has produced some great videos starring Merivale teachers. Now he's gathered some of them in one section of the site called "The Video Vault", and for anyone who can recognize the teachers in the movies, it's a good time diversion.
There are only 4 videos in this section right now, and I think they were all made this year, but if you poke around the site you might be able to find a few others and some from last year. Most of the teachers featured are newer on staff (eg Ms. Sheremeto, Mr. Pender, and Mr. O'Connor [not Fergus!] have been around for 2-3 years), but there are some appearances by teachers earlier grads would recognize. I'm pretty sure anyone who ever knew of Mr. Terry O'Byrne would appreciate one of the most recent videos, "Byrne Baby Byrne: The Legend of a Disco Superstar."
Enjoy!

So, here's an important question! Are any of you members (or lurkers...?) actually going to be at Merivale next year? I am graduating and am potentially interested in adding a co-mod to the community. It would be great if we had someone actually attending to keep us (somewhat) up to date about events!

Any grade 11's need an Ancient Civ textbook, to replace one they lost? Someone gave me one a long time ago and its just been sitting on my shelf so I figured I would just give it to the school..but if someone lost theirs, id rather give it to them cause its kind of a bitch to pay like $60 for lost textbooks. let me know if u need one, or someone that does.

This year's plays include a murder mystery, a serious but funny play about unemployment, and the wacky hijinks of a psychic. All proceeds go to the Ottawa Food Bank, and there is no minimum donation. (Also, by the way, every dollar donated to the Ottawa Food Bank generates $7 of food for the community) So come out for an entertaining night this Thursday or Friday; tell your friends, bring your friends -- the more the better!

Since elections are on Friday, I thought I'd let you all know you should vote for
SCOTT HINDLE. AKA- SCINDLE
Of course you all get 2 votes so pick your second (either Mundeep, or Powell). My opinion is probably biased as I do know Scott but....
You'd want a Co-Prez who has been involved with Student Council for at least the past year or longer. -who knows the ropes. -who has extracurricular involvements as well as other school events such as the musical or Spirit Rep. -who is going to put the school needs ahead of anything else. -who is going to not only take extra time to ensure the student's satisfaction but isn't slacking off in class. -who is honest, has the Student Body in mind and is going to be connected. -who is going to listen to your ideas. This is your school. Run it your way.
There are several reasons why 4 of the 7 runners who should be reconsidered before voting for them, or not at all. I'm sure you'd all like to know what sort of people you're voting for. By now, you should have guessed who the other 4 are. The following may sound harsh but honest is best, no?
-You don't want someone who has never had involvement with the Student Council, nor any other involvements in school in any shape or form. -There are several of the 4 who only wants to have fun but has no clue of the harsh commitment involved with running the Student Body. -Several who have been involved with the Multicultural show but has never been to a meeting, nor communicated with the executives (myself and 3 other lovely ladies). One, who has lied to the executives to have his own performance because 'it was his last year'. Funny, I had no idea last year of high school was grade 11. -Several of whom want better dances and grad events though Dance Reps and Grad Reps are responsible for those sections of the Student Council.
Who wants irresponsible, non-commited lying Co-Prez's? Voting for your friends is never the way. Especially if you know they've slacked off in small areas.
VOTE SCINDLE!

They are in the foyer with lollipops every lunch time. 2) If you want to go to commencement, make sure the office knows about it. Check off your name on the posters posted inside and make sure they'll spell your name correctly on your diploma! 3) If you're going to prom, the second payment is due next Wednesday. It's $35 made out to " MHS Grads 06" and delivered to one of the grad reps. If you want to go to prom but missed the first payment, you can still get a ticket, but for $85 :)

For anyone helping with the set design for MHS's musical "Luck Stiff", the boards for the set construction haven't come in yet so Mrs.Barclay has decided to hold off on any further plans until indicated, so make sure to pay attention to the art room door in the A-wing for a green piece of paper. As soon as that piece of paper or an announcement has been posted everything is a go.

| Battery Bake Sale! |
[28 Feb 2006|07:56pm] |
Just a reminder that the environmental club's annual battery bake sale takes place Wednesday and Thursday of this week! Ie, tomorrow and the day after. Bring in dead batteries so that they can be properly disposed of, and have your pick of baked goods!
Also, Friday is an early dismissal day, which means we get out at 12:15. We'll have all four classes, but they're somehow shortened.
A quick glance over the membership list tells me that most of you are alumni. What kinds of posts would you, as alumni, like to see on this community?

| postponed exams |
[30 Jan 2006|11:50am] |
This probably comes too late to be of use to anyone, but all of today's exams are postponed to tomorrow. Because...the buses from Manotick were cancelled, so in the name of fairness to the Manotick students, all exams are postponed.
I'm totally surprised. I mean, we don't get snow days, but exams can be cancelled due to inclement weather? But I get another day to prep for my Literature essay, so I'm ok with it.
Edit: The school website now says that since Monday's exams are postponed to tomorrow, Tuesday's exams are postponed to Wednesday. Turnover day will be Thursday, and the first full day of semester two will be Firday.

| hey, "involved" people! |
[17 Jan 2006|06:26pm] |
Is anyone here involved in Athletics or Music Council this year? I've got some questions about The Grind, Turkey Shoot, Gladiators, Jazz Night, and the winter Music Concert I need answered ASAP! If you just participated (rather than helped organize) any of these, I'd still like to talk to you. I'd also like to talk to anyone involved in the Thanksgiving Canned Food Drive or Toy Mountain.
Actually one of my questions is not specific to this year, so I'll just ask: What are Turkey Shoot and Gladiators? What actually happens at them, and why do people participate in them?

| december reminders! |
[22 Dec 2005|06:02pm] |
Hi everyone! A reminder that tomorrow is the last day before the holiday break, not that you really needed a reminder. If you are going to school, here's a reminder that your morning classes will be shortened by five minutes each, and there'll be a "lunch break" from about 10:30-11:00. Then it's the holiday assembly, which everyone should watch for the teacher's play at least. But you know the drill, the whole day is pretty much optional.
Also, grade 12s, your grad writeups are due tomorrow, so go to the website and get yours done! (That's a link to the announcement about it. Here's a link to the page of rules, which you have to read and agree to before you can submit your write up.)
Happy holidays everyone!

| DVD sales! |
[08 Dec 2005|10:15pm] |
CONGRATS to everyone involved in the multicultural show tonight. It was awesome, well done all around! Just a reminder that DVDs of the show are available (for order?) tomorrow at lunch for $10.
Also, DVDs of this year's Ananda production, A Midsummer Night's Dream, can be ordered starting tomorrow (there'll be a sign-up & payment envelope somewhere around the drama room, or you can comment on this post if you're interested but not at Merivale, and I could try to arrange something for you). The price is $5 and they won't be on sale for long. Final date for orders and payment is Wednesday (Dec 14) Friday (Dec 14), and the DVDs will be ready for pick-up at Merivale on Monday (Dec 19).
And also...it's pyjama/crazy hair day tomorrow. Show your spirit by...not grooming :P
