カゴシマ　松笠型の八重咲と美しく咲く紅地に白斑美しい椿

その花は八重咲で、花弁が立体的に立ち上がり、
その姿が松ぼっくりの様な形、松笠型に咲くもの。


鹿児島県鹿児島市吉野町にある薩摩藩主島津氏の
別邸の大名庭園、名勝『仙巌園』（センガンエン）
にこの原木があるとされる。


前述の通り、その花の形が松ぼっくりに似ている
事から『松笠』（マツカサ）という名前で呼ばれた
品種があり、この『鹿児島』（カゴシマ）は花弁の
紅地色に白斑が美しく入った品種となっている。


『鹿児島』の名の由来は、仙巌園を始め鹿児島県を
中心に栽培されているものであり、この椿自体が
昭和５３年の日本ツバキ協会の場に初出展されて
その美しさから、『鹿児島』の名前で広く知られる
ものとなった椿である。別名で『薩摩』（サツマ）
とも呼ばれている。


日本のみならず世界でもこの美しさから好評価で
『パインコーン』と云う名前で、海外から市場にも
出回っている。この『パインコーン』の名の意味は
『松ぼっくり』である。

The Kagoshima camellia is a double-flowered
variety with petals that rise in a three-dimensional
form, giving the flower a unique pinecone-like shape,
also known as Matsukasa-style (meaning “pinecone form”).


The original tree of this camellia is said to be located
in Sengan-en, a historic daimyo garden in Yoshino-cho,
Kagoshima City, which was once the residence of the
Shimazu clan, the feudal lords of the Satsuma domain.


As mentioned earlier, due to its resemblance to a
pinecone, a similar variety was named “Matsukasa”
(Pinecone). However, Kagoshima stands out with its
beautiful red petals adorned with white variegation,
making it a distinct and admired cultivar.


The name “Kagoshima” originates from the fact that
this camellia was cultivated primarily in Kagoshima
Prefecture, including Sengan-en. It was first exhibited
at the Japan Camellia Society’s exhibition in 1978
(Showa 53), where it gained recognition for its striking
beauty and became widely known under the name
“Kagoshima”. It is also referred to by its alternative
name, “Satsuma”.


Beyond Japan, this camellia has received high acclaim
worldwide for its exceptional beauty. Internationally,
it is marketed under the name “Pinecone”, which
directly translates to “Matsukasa”, emphasizing its
distinctive pinecone-like floral form.
